Volunteers needed to develop recommendations to improve court reporting programs

The Michigan Court Reporting and Recording Board of Review is seeking volunteers to serve on three new subcommittees focusing on recommending improvements to court reporter and recorder program. Committee members expect to meet virtually at least monthly with more frequent meetings possible, if needed.

The three subcommittees and their roles are:

• The Manual for Court Reporters and Recorders Subcommittee – The Manual for Court Reporters and Recorders is adopted by the Board of Review as a guide of the duties, responsibilities, and standards that each reporter and recorder must uphold. It contains a condensed summarization of all court rules, statutes, and policies relevant to each court reporter and recorder. The Manual Subcommittee will be responsible for making recommendations to the Board of Review to improve the manual, including reformatting the manual and ensuring that the manual is up to date. This subcommittee’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, reviewing any proposed manual change requests and providing a recommendation to the Board of Review on if and where the change would go in the manual, monthly review of the manual for outdated court rules, legislation, and policies as changes are made, redesigning the format of the manual, and working with the SCAO to publish an updated manual annually.

• The Examination Subcommittee – The Examination Subcommittee will be responsible for making recommendations to the Board of Review about the certification examination process, examination content, and the development of examination standards. This subcommittee’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, establishing standards for knowledge and skills testing on each section of the exam, developing new exam material, developing a strict standard grading and appeal system, developing a roster of qualified exam graders, and conducting information-gathering sessions with examinees.

• The Education and Training Subcommittee – The Education and Training Subcommittee will make recommendations to the Board of Review about training and education and the development of materials for court recorders and reporters and those directly affected by their work. This subcommittee’s responsibilities may include, but not be limited to, developing a core curriculum and a review process for the course of study, developing reference materials for court recorders/reporters and others, and developing training relevant to the skills, knowledge, and work of court recorders/reporters.

Applications are due by Thursday, February 23. To apply for one of the subcommittees, visit https://bit.ly/3Z0zIQ0. Email questions to ctrec-info@courts. mi.gov.
