Undergraduate students interested in attending law school are invited to apply to Wayne State University Law School's Damon J. Keith Pre-Law Summer Institute.
The free, four-week summer program aims to provide the next generation of lawyers with the resources to successfully apply to and attend law school.
The program is open to rising juniors and seniors who are pursuing an undergraduate degree at any institution, or sophomores participating in a 3+3 program at Wayne State University or Oakland University.
Applicants must have graduated from a Detroit Public Schools Community District Public High School or be residents of the city of Detroit.
Participants will receive a full, in-person Kaplan test preparation program for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and a $500 stipend to cover LSAT registration.
The program also connects students with law firms, courts, legal aid organizations, and mentors in the legal community.
Additionally, Wayne Law faculty and staff will provide instructional sessions on legal writing, academic success, financial literacy, professionalism, and the law school application and admissions process.
“Through the DJK Pre-Law Summer Institute, Wayne Law continues its commitment to developing the next generation of diverse law students and lawyers, ” says Tierney Hoffman, assistant director of student engagement and culture at Wayne Law. “The program makes law school more accessible to DPSCD high school graduates and Detroit residents by providing the resources needed to successfully apply to and succeed in law school.”
This first-of-its-kind program at Wayne State is named for Judge Damon J. Keith and will be held in the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne Law.
For more than 50 years on the federal bench, Keith persuasively and movingly defended the Constitution and helped communities enforce their civil rights. Keith, who earned his LL.M. from Wayne Law in 1956, passed away in 2019.
To apply, visit law.wayne.edu/admissions/jd/djk-institute. Students are required to complete a two-page statement of interest, and to commit to a 4-week program.
Program runs from July 10 to August 4 with a daily schedule of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Application deadline is May 15, 2023.
