Bar associations announce honorees for the 61st annual Barristers' Ball

The Wolverine Bar Foundation (WBF) and Wolverine Bar Association (WBA) have announced the honorees for this year’s 61st Annual Barristers’ Ball.

Community, civic, and business leaders from across the state will come together at the black-tie charity fundraising gala on Saturday, April 29 to raise money for scholarships and educational programs designed to improve diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and ensure equal justice and access under the law for all.

The WBF’s annual awards program honors exceptional professionals across the state. The honorees who will be celebrated at the 61st Annual Barristers’ Ball include:

• Community Impact Award — Bishop Edgar Vann II, senior pastor of the Second Ebenezer Church

• Civic Service Award — Virgie Rollins, chair of the Democratic National Committee Black Caucus

• Legacy Award — Dr. Carl S. Taylor, professor emeritus, Michigan State University

• Legacy Award and Golden Gavel Award — Hon. Victoria A. Roberts, U.S. District Court judge, Eastern District of Michigan, and the first Black woman president of the State Bar of Michigan

• Golden Gavel Award — Hon. John A. Murphy, 3rd Circuit Court judge and Michigan’s longest-serving state-elected Black judge

• Golden Gavel Award — Hon. Deborah G. Ford, 36th District Court Judge

“The Annual Barristers’ Ball is our biggest fundraiser in support of the important outreach, scholarship, and educational programs led by the volunteers for the Wolverine Bar Foundation each year,” said Allen W. Venable, WBF and WBA president. “In addition to being a memorable evening of entertainment, camaraderie, and a chance to honor the best our profession has to offer — it is an important way to help support the next generation of civic leaders and legal professionals.”

Each year, more than 2,500 local leaders come together to celebrate the Annual Barristers’ Ball, which will take place at the Detroit Marriott Hotel at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit.
