Applicants sought for spots on Appellate Defender Commission

The State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners is seeking applications for the following vacancies:

• Michigan Appellate Defender Commission: Two vacancies for four-year terms beginning in May 2023

The Michigan Appellate Defender Commission is a statewide, seven-person body that sets policy for the State Appellate Defender Office and the Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System, hires the directors, and reviews and adopts regulations for assigning appellate counsel. Commissioners are nominated by the State Bar and various courts and appointed by the governor. The commission meets quarterly.

Those interested in applying should submit a resume and a letter of interest via email to mbossenbery@michbar.org.

The deadline to apply is May 12.


WSU Legal Briefs to feature law professor online

The Wayne State University  Law School Legal Briefs program will feature Eric Zacks, associate professor of law, on Wednesday, May 3, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. online via Zoom.

Zacks’ scholarship and area of expertise is modern contracting practices and the relevance of behavioral and cognitive sciences to the legal and social construction of contract formation, breach and enforcement.

The presentation will focus on the Jaffe Transactional Law Competition and how it has prepared law students to develop drafting, negotiation, and counseling skills in the transactional context.

The one-hour, virtual event is moderated by the development and alumni affairs team within Wayne Law.  Alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of Wayne Law are invited to attend, ask questions, and connect in dialogue.

WLAM Macomb gears up for ‘Cocktails for a Cause’

The Women Lawyers Association Macomb Region is putting finishing touches on planning for its annual charity event & member meeting.

“Cocktails for a Cause” will be held on Thursday, May 11, at Filippa’s in Shelby Township. The cocktail hour will begin at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will support the Macomb Food Program. Cost is $50 for members and $55 for non-members.
