Well-Being Week in Law returns May 1-5 as part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness about mental health issues and to encourage well-being. Celebrated as part of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Well-Being Week in Law is coordinated by the Institute for Well-Being in the Law (https://lawyerwellbeing.net/well-being-week-in-law).
Self-care is especially important for lawyers and law students. According to a 2016 study by the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs and Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, lawyers suffer from higher-than-average rates of problem drinking, depression, anxiety, and stress.
Michigan has been a national leader in exploring the issue of well-being in the legal profession. In 2022, the Michigan Supreme Court and State Bar of Michigan created the Task Force on Well-Being in the Law to identify stakeholders and the role they can play in reducing the stresses to mental health in the legal profession; eliminating the stigma associated with help-seeking behaviors; educating judges, lawyers, and law students on well-being issues; and taking incremental steps to instill greater well-being in the profession.
To promote Well-Being in the Law Week, the State Bar of Michigan will share resources and information on its social media channels throughout the week. The Institute for Well-Being in the Law also is hosting daily educational webinars and training on how to incorporate wellness tools into your life from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
• Monday: Moving Together: The Science and Experience of communal movement
• Tuesday: What Does the U.S. Surgeon General's Framework for Mental Health and Well-being in the Workplace Mean for You?
• Wednesday: Pro Bono & Community Service as a Pathway to Well-being & Job Satisfaction.
