More than two dozen Michigan judges of Arab and Chaldean descent gathered recently for an inaugural meeting of the Arab-American Judges Association of Michigan. The gathering of the state and federal judges took place at the Bint Jebail Cultural Center in Dearborn, and included a meal and reception. The Arab American Judges Association of Michigan (AAJAM) is the result of an effort to bring together judges of Arab American ancestry, according to founders of the organization. Its mission is to promote diverse judicial leadership and foster social, professional, and personal development among members. Relatedly, the AAJOM hopes to encourage Arab Americans to pursue legal careers and organize education, mentorship, and outreach programs. The portrait in the background is that of the late Hajj Turfe, a driving force behind the establishment of the Bint Jebail Cultural Center and the father of Judge David Turfe of the 20th District Court in Dearborn Heights.
