Upcoming ABA Annual Meeting packed with events, top awards August 2-8
The 2023 American Bar Association Annual Meeting runs from August 2-8 in Denver, Colorado, offering an array of blockbuster programs, award presentations and the semiannual House of Delegates (HOD) policymaking meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Colorado Convention Center with programs there and at several hotels. There will be seven CLE Showcase programs on emerging trends in the legal profession and a host of other programs offering continuing legal education credit on numerous aspects of the law.
Timely programs include panels on the past term of the U.S. Supreme Court, in which court observers explore the implications of recent major decisions; two state trial judges — South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman (State of South Carolina v. Richard Alexander Murdaugh) and Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis (Dominion Voting Systems v. Fox News Network) — sharing personal experiences of managing high-profile trials; a look at court cases involving products related to Andy Warhol and Jack Daniel’s Properties and the tension between First Amendment speech protection and the rights of brand/copyright owners; and an assessment of the Innocence Project at 20 years, which includes insights from Innocence Project pioneer Barry Scheck.
Two of the ABA’s top award recipients will be honored as part of several award presentations. On Saturday, August 5, during the ABA General Assembly, the association’s highest honor, the ABA Medal, will be given to Fred D. Gray, described by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as “the chief counsel” of the civil rights movement.
Also, Native American rights activist John E. Echohawk will receive the ABA Thurgood Marshall Award at a dinner honoring his distinguished career on August 5. U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke will give the keynote address and ABA President-elect Mary L. Smith will give remarks.
The ABA Board of Governors will meet in committee and full session on August 3-4. The HOD, which encompasses 597 delegates from ABA entities and state, local and specialty bar associations, will meet August 7-8. The ABA presidency will transition from current President Deborah Enix-Ross to Smith at the conclusion of the meeting.
