‘Promises and Perils of AI in the Courts’ examined in NCSC webinar

The National Center for State Courts will present the webinar “The Promises and Perils of AI in the Courts – AI 101” on Wednesday, August 16, from 3 ro 4:15 p.m. via Zoom.

In the first installment of this webinar series, court and legal experts will demystify the basics of AI (artificial intelligence).  Presenters will include:

• Bridget M. McCormack, president and CEO, American Arbitration Association; retired chief justice, Michigan Supreme Court

• Jennifer Leonard, chief innovation officer and executive director, Future of the Profession Initiative, Penn Carey Law, University of Pennsylvania

• Casey Kennedy, director of information services, Texas Office of Court Administration

Future sessions will focus on the impact of AI on the practice of law and the courts and how AI can both help and potentially harm the work of the courts. Topics will include “AI and the Practice of Law” and “AI in the Courts: What You Need to Know.” Additional sessions are tentatively planned for Thursday, September 21, and Wednesday, October 18.

Detroit man sentenced in criminal sexual conduct conviction

On Wednesday, Dewon Henderson, a 37 year-old man from Detroit, was sentenced in front of Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Kathryn Viviano for his guilty conviction of Criminal Sexual Conduct.

In December 2021, Henderson sexually assaulted a minor in a hotel in Roseville.  Henderson was charged with two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the First Degree (life felony).  On Friday, June 16, a Macomb County jury convicted Henderson on all counts after a four-day jury trial by Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Lozen.

On Wednesday, Henderson was sentenced to a mandatory minimum of 25 years to 40 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections. He must register on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry, have lifetime electronic monitoring, and pay fines and costs.
