By Jake Jenkins

Professor Veronica Thronson Clinical law professor and Director of the MSU Immigration Law Clinic at Michigan State University College of Law, Veronica Thronson, will be honored by the State Bar of Michigan for their Champion of Justice Award.

The award will be presented at the Presidential Inauguration and Awards Luncheon Sept. 21 at the Marriot Hotel in Troy, Mich.

The Champion of Justice Award is given to practicing lawyers and judges of integrity and adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession, superior professional competence and an extraordinary professional accomplishment that benefits the nation, the state, or the local community in which the lawyer or judge lives.

“It is very humbling to be recognized by the State Bar of Michigan,” Thronson said. “The work that goes into training and preparing the students to provide thoughtful and zealous representation of their clients is not easy, but I feel privileged to be able to make a difference in the students’ careers and the clients’ lives.”

Since starting the Immigration Law Clinic in 2010, Thronson has spent many hours supporting students and those in need.

“I have dedicated lots of time and effort to finding ways to build a stronger community and improve access to legal services for immigrants,” she said. “It’s always wonderful to learn that others see and appreciate your work.”

Thronson teaches Domestic Violence Law, Family Law: Marriage & Divorce, and Immigration and Nationality Law at MSU. She routinely conducts training for attorneys and judges and was appointed to the faculty of The National Judicial College in 2012.

Since 2015 she has served as expert faculty with the National Immigrant Women's Advocacy Project at American University Washington College of Law’s national Family Law Attorneys Community of Practice.

From 2002 to 2010, Thronson was the Domestic Violence Project Directing Attorney at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, where she practiced family and immigration law.

The event will honor the 89th President of the State Bar of Michigan as President James Heath will pass the gavel to president-elect, Daniel Quick.
