Annual Ambulance Chase 5K to raise funds Sept. 16

Wayne State University Law School will conduct its 2023 Ambulance Chase 5K on Saturday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to noon on campus, 471 West Palmer Ave. in Detroit.

The Ambulance Chase 5K is an opportunity to bring the Wayne Law community, Detroit legal community, and Michigan legal community together in one place.

This year, the Ambulance Chase will benefit the Public Interest Law Fellowship (PILF) program. Wayne Law has a long history of developing lawyers who devote their careers to public service or serving the public good in other ways. In doing so, many students take on unpaid internships or volunteer opportunities in service to our community. PILF provides financial support to promote opportunities in public interest law, ease student financial stresses, and offer needed assistance to organizations providing legal services to underserved constituencies.

Registration for the Ambulance Chase is $25 to participate. Individually wrapped food items and beverages will be provided. For additional information and to register, visit www.eventbrite.com and search “Ambulance Chase.”

Anyone with questions or interest in becoming an event sponsor should email Katie Prebelich at kpreb@wayne.edu.

Law school to conduct 111th Annual Red Mass

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law invites the legal community to celebrate the 111th Annual Red Mass on Tuesday, September 12, beginning at noon at Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Church, 438 Saint Antoine in Detroit.

Red Mass is an occasion for judges, attorneys, civic leaders and law students of all faiths to come together and pray for blessings and strength in the coming year’s work. A luncheon reception in the atrium at Detroit Mercy Law immediately follows the service.

This year’s Red Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, Archdiocese of Detroit. Fr. John Maksym, St. Peter Catholic Church, Mount Clemens, serves as the Homilist. U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis, Sixth Circuit, will lead the Renewal of the Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment.

Detroit Mercy Law’s annual Red Mass dates back to 1877, when Detroit College, as the university was then known, began its first year with a Mass at Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church. The School of Law continued the tradition when it opened in 1912, again hosting the Red Mass on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Ss. Peter and Paul through the present.

To register for the September 12 Red Mass, visit https://law.udmercy.edu and scroll down to “Upcoming Events.” Anyone with questions should contact Brittany at dawsonba2@udmercy.edu.
