Macomb County prosecutor announces programs to safeguard seniors from scams

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido is offering free presentations to seniors and their family members to protect them from scams and give them the information they need to recognize and avoid becoming a victim of scams.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office provides an informational booklet called “S.C.A.M.S. Stopping Crimes Against Macomb Seniors,” to inform senior citizens of Macomb County how to protect themselves.

The booklet provides information on scams including identity theft, telemarketing fraud, internet fraud, home improvement fraud and caregiver fraud.

Many scams are sent by email or phone calls,?Lucido said, adding that he was recently made aware of a man impersonating a police officer and asking for money over the phone. A police agency will never ask for money over the phone, he said.

The prosecutor’s office presents Senior SCAMS presentations throughout Macomb County. This free presentation will include the SCAMS booklets and discussion on the current scams regarding Macomb County seniors.

The next presentation is scheduled at the Senior Expo in Shelby Township on Monday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held at The Palazzo Grande located at 54660 Van Dyke Ave. in Shelby Twp., MI 48315

Another presentation is scheduled at the Senior Fun Festival on Friday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lorenzo Cultural Center located at 44575 Garfield Rd in Clinton Twp.
