Taking a look at pro bono opportunities

The Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan (HBAM) will present an online “Pro Bono Opportunities Lunch and Learn” on Tuesday, September 26, from noon to 1 p.m. via Teams.

The State Bar of Michigan has adopted the Voluntary Pro Bono Standard stating that all active SBM members should participate in direct delivery of pro bono legal services to the economically disadvantaged.  

Three panelists presented by HBAM?will discuss their respective organizations and how lawyers in the community can help those in the most need. The panelists include:

• Ruby Robinson, managing attorney, Michigan Immigrant Rights Center.

• Angela Reyes, co-founder and board chair, Detroit Hispanic Development Center.

• Mary Carmen Muñoz, executive director, La Sed (Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development).

Panel to discuss wrongful convictions

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law’s Conviction Integrity Clinic will present a panel discussion on wrongful convictions on Wednesday, September 27.  

“The Road to Exoneration: An Open Conversation with Judge and Exonerees” will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Detroit Mercy Law Atrium, 651 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit.

To kick off Wrongful Conviction Day, panelists will share their experiences and address issues that lead to a wrongful conviction, as well as discuss the work to further the mission in helping incarcerated individuals with innocence claims.  

Panelists will include exonerees Ken Nixon and Gilbert Poole, Wayne County Circuit Court Judges Mariam Bazzi and Kevin Cox, and moderator Valerie Newman, director, Wayne County Prosecutor Conviction Integrity Unit, and director, Detroit Mercy Law Conviction Integrity Clinic.

Oktoberfest event to raise funds

The New Lawyers Division of the Michigan Association for Justice will host an Oktoberfest event on Thursday, September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Corner Bar in Ferndale.

The evening of beers and cheers will raise funds for Justice PAC.  

Cost is $50 for a supporter, $100 for a patron and $250 for a host.
