Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed October 22-28 as Lights on Afterschool Week in Michigan, the Michigan Afterschool Partnership announced.
Lights on Afterschool is an annual celebration promoting the importance of quality afterschool programs in the lives of children, families, and communities nationwide.
“Afterschool programs ensure students are safe and engaged once they are released from school,” said Erin-Skene Pratt, executive director of MASP. “Lights on Afterschool Week is a great time for us to celebrate our afterschool programs and the opportunities they provide for both children and their families.”
Michigan recently invested $50 million for out-of-school time programming in the state budget, which is being distributed through a competitive grant process to grow and strengthen programs around the state.
Afterschool programs build stronger communities by involving students, parents, business leaders, and adult volunteers in the lives of young people, the governor said, thereby promoting positive relationships among youth, families, and adults.
More than 8,000 Lights on Afterschool events are expected to be held this year, attracting participation from more than one million Americans.
