License renewal deadline approaching

The deadline for the 2023-24 Michigan law license renewal process is fast approaching. Payment must be received or postmarked by the post office by Thursday, November 30, to avoid a $50 late fee.

Attorneys can renew their law license by logging in at michbar.org/MemberArea?and clicking “Renew Your License Now” at the bottom. For additional information about license renewal, see the FAQ at www.michbar.org/licenserenewalfaq.

As a reminder, this year’s license renewal includes new requirements for private practice attorneys to ensure compliance with Rule 21: Mandatory Interim Administrator Planning, which requires private practice attorneys to make an interim administrator plan and name a person with knowledge of their practice.

Attorneys can review these requirements at?michbar.org/Rule21?prior to beginning their license renewal.

Justices hear arguments before high school students

The Michigan Supreme Court last month heard oral arguments at Powers Catholic High School in Flint before students from local schools as part of its Court Community Connections program.

This program aims to engage high school students in learning about the judicial branch.

“Like us, you have already studied this case. You know what the issues are. You’ve come to today’s hearing with questions you would ask if you were a Justice,” said Chief Justice Elizabeth T. Clement in opening remarks to the students in the audience. “And when the court issues its decision, you will get to analyze our ruling and decide whether you agree or would have done things differently.”

The case marks a precedent-setting event in Michigan as the court grapples with the question of whether a northern Michigan township may have violated a family’s Fourth Amendment rights by employing a drone for surveillance on their private property.
