Biernat stays on as Macomb County's top judge

The Michigan Supreme Court has reappointed Judge James M. Biernat, Jr. to a two-year term as chief judge of Macomb County Circuit Court as well as Macomb County Probate Court and 42nd District Courts.

“I am honored to be reappointed as chief judge by the Michigan Supreme Court,” Biernat said in a statement issued when the action was announced earlier this month. “We have accomplished many important projects during my tenure as chief judge, but there is still much work to be done.

Biernat was appointed to the bench in 2011 and elected as a judge the next year. He began serving as chief judge in 2015 upon the retirement of former Chief Judge John D. Foster and has been reappointed by the state’s top court to the two-year term since then.

During his tenure as chief judge, Biernat has helped coordinate court renovation projects that resulted in a movement of all circuit and probate court operations to one downtown location in the circuit court building.

At the same time, there has been the addition of a Sobriety Treatment Court as well as the addition of new judges to serve the county.

Biernat has worked as well with the county executive to improve the delivery of indigent defense.

Over the next two years, Biernat said he looked forward to the planning and implementation of a strategic plan for the county’s circuit court. Furthermore, the chief judge said he is focused on expanding and improving the court’s self-help center.

Such improvements, he said, will provide “the stability of the court that the public deserves and will assist in the continued effort of the court to provide equal access to justice to all litigants.”
