Ceremonies held to recognize adoptive families in Michigan
As the state celebrated Adoption Day this past week and marks Adoption Month during November, families across the state are being recognized by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange as Outstanding Adoptive Families.
“Adoption Day and Adoption Month are times for all of us to think about and recognize the many loving families who step up to provide permanent homes for children who need them,” said Director Elizabeth Hertel of MDHHS, which oversees the state’s child welfare system.
More than 1,600 children were adopted from Michigan’s child welfare system from October of last year through September 2023.
Courts statewide, in partnership with MDHHS, are holding special Adoption Month ceremonies this month at which children officially become permanent members of their new forever families.
Law school and university agree to end affiliation
In 2013, Cooley Law School and Western Michigan University entered into a 10-year affiliation agreement, which ended effective November 10.
Both institutions have agreed not to seek an extension in order to focus more on their own core mission and values.
During the affiliation, each institution had retained independent governance, as overseen by separate boards, and the agreement did not involve an exchange of funds or financial support. The dissolution does not affect the operations of either entity.
Cooley President and Dean James McGrath is enthusiastic about the future of Cooley Law School.
“We are very excited about the launch of our new curriculum which the faculty have been working on for months now,” McGrath said. “We are making sure our curriculum is not only ready to meet the challenges of today but is nimble enough to shift as the law continues to change.
Certification of problem-solving courts explored online
The Michigan Judicial Institute and Problem-Solving Courts (PSC) will conduct a “Problem-Solving Courts Certification Process” virtual program on Wednesday, December 13, via Zoom.
The program will provide an overview of the PSC certification process, what is required to achieve certification, and the certification site visit process. The training is intended for coordinators and other leaders of adult problem-solving courts, especially those who have a certification site visit in 2024.
For registration information, contact PSC@courts.mi.gov.
