What is Hamas? What does it stand for and believe?
Admittedly, it would have been best to try and answer these questions at the beginning of the war after Hamas’ horrific and savage attack on Israel October 7.
I was remiss in that, but I thought it still would be helpful to answer those questions by examining two Hamas documents: “The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (acronym Hamas)” issued one year after its founding in 1998 and “Hamas: A Document of General Principles and Policies” issued in 2017.
In the following I only cite excerpts (without comment) from the two documents that relate to Israel, Zionism, and Jews. The Covenant addresses Jews and Zionism while the second refers primarily to Zionism. Both make it clear that Hamas intends to achieve its objectives through Jihad (Islamic Holy War).
• “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it…”
• “In the face of the Jews’ usurpation, it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised…for our struggle against the Jews is extremely wide-ranging and grave…”
• “The Day of Judgment will not come about until Moslems fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: ‘O, Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him.’”
• “The enemies have been scheming for a long time…and have accumulated huge and influential material wealth. They took control of the world media…and stood behind the French Revolution, the Communist Revolution and most of the revolutions we hear about…There is no war going on anywhere without them having their finger on it.”
• “The Nazism of the Jews does not skip women and children. It scares everyone. They make war against people’s livelihood, plunder their moneys (sic) and threaten their honour.”
• “Zionism scheming has no end…their scheme has been laid out in the ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion.’” [The infamous Protocols are a fictional and libelous account on how Jews are plotting to dominate the world.]
• “The HAMAS regards itself the spearhead and the vanguard [in] the struggle against World Zionism and…warmongering Jews.”
• “Palestine [all of Israel] with Jerusalem as its capital is the land that was seized by a racist, non-human and colonial Zionist project that was founded on a false promise…Not one stone of Jerusalem can be surrendered or relinquished.”
• “International conferences are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement…Those conferences are no more than a means to appoint the infidels as arbitrators in the lands of Islam…conferences are a waste of time, an exercise in futility.”
• “There is no solution for the Palestinians problem except by Jihad.”
• Hamas consider all treaties, pacts, agreements, resolutions — between nations or international — relating to Israel null and void.
• Hamas “denounces the support granted by any party to the Zionist entity or the attempts to cover up its crimes and aggression against the Palestinians and calls for the prosecution of Zionist war criminals.”
• “The Zionist entity is the plaything of the Zionist project and its base of aggression…it is the enemy of the Arab and Islamic Ummah [community] posing a grave threat to its security and interests.”
• “Hamas does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine.” [Then Hamas adds:] “Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their won colonial project and illegal entity.”
“The Zionist movement, which was able with the help of Western powers, to occupy Palestine, is the most dangerous form of settlement occupation which has already disappeared from much of the world and must disappear from Palestine.”
• Zionists have “intermediaries” that “take all sorts of names and shapes such as the Free Masons, Rotary Clubs, gangs of spies and the like. All of them are nests of saboteurs and sabotage…Muslims will wipe out those organizations which are the enemy of humanity and Islam.”
I will refrain from any comment; I think this “philosophy” speaks for itself. I will, however, make three brief observations.
The October 7 atrocities — wanton killing of babies, beheading civilians, burning some alive, gang raping women, and abducting about 240 people — are in keeping with Hamas’ charter and principles. And let’s not forget, Hamas has promised to repeat the savagery “again, again and again.”
Moreover, this is the entity that seeks the blood of Jews and calls for the destruction of Israel with which the world wants Israel to negotiate a peace.
Finally, for those who condemn Hamas’ murderous barbarity but justify it by adding that this “did not happen in a vacuum,” as did the U.N. secretary general and so many others, I will reprint a quote from a New York Times column by Thomas L. Friedman. In that column, Mansour Abbas, a devout Muslim, an Arab Palestinian citizen of Israel and a member of Israel’s parliament, said:
“And we cannot condemn it [the massacre] and say ‘but’ — that word ‘but’ has become immoral.”
