Lakeshore Legal Aid recently announced a $2.5 million donation from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott through her charitable organization, Yield Giving, a contribution that will support Lakeshore’s work to improve communities by holistically addressing the legal issues of families with low incomes, older adults and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Expressing gratitude for the donation, Lakeshore Chief Executive Officer Ashley Lowe emphasized its importance in advancing the organization’s goal to eradicate poverty and empower marginalized communities.
She credited the donation to Lakeshore staff’s commitment to championing the legal rights of the families within the communities it serves.
“I am exceptionally proud to be part of a team dedicated to advancing social justice,” Lowe stated. “Lakeshore plans to use this remarkable contribution to transform the organization’s delivery systems so that, in the future, Lakeshore will be more efficient and effective in serving the community. We are honored and deeply appreciative of receiving this impactful donation.”
In accordance with its mission, “Standing with our neighbors, Lakeshore Legal Aid fights poverty and injustice through advocacy and by providing meaningful and dignified access to the legal system,” Lakeshore provides free legal representation in the Detroit metro area and Port Huron. Lakeshore also provides client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via its attorney-staffed Counsel & Advocacy Law Line hotline. Lakeshore’s practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law. For additional information, visit https://lakeshorelegalaid.org.
