Livestreamed event set to fill vacancies on redistricting panel

The Michigan Department of State will hold?a livestreamed random selection on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 3:30 p.m. to replace three commissioners who resigned from the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.

The Secretary of State’s office received Commissioner MC Rothhorn’s resignation last Tuesday. Rothhorn affiliates with the Democratic Party.

Also that day, Commissioner Douglas Clark’s resignation was received. He affiliates with the Republican Party.

Commissioner Dustin Witjes' resignation was submitted on Dec. 20. He affiliates with the Democratic Party.

The state constitution outlines the process of replacing commissioners. New commissioners will be randomly selected from the remaining pool of semi-finalist applicants who affiliate with the same party as the departing commissioner.

Of the 200 semi-finalists randomly selected in June 2020, there are 52 remaining who affiliate with the?Democratic Party and 54 who affiliate with the Republican Party.
 

Specialty court interlock program unveiled in Macomb

A new program is now in effect that expands the eligibility of specialty court participants to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle and obtain a restricted driver’s license, according to Macomb County Circuit Court officials.

Earlier, participation in an ignition interlock program was limited to DWI/sobriety court participants only.

This program will now apply to all treatment court programs within the 16th Circuit Court  — the Adult Drug Court Program, the DWI/Sobriety Treatment Court Program, the Mental Health Court Program and the Veterans Treatment Court Program.

This expansion will offer many individuals the opportunity to earn their license back.

New virtual support group for attorneys set to start Jan. 17

The State Bar of Michigan’s Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program is offering a virtual support group for attorneys to work through stress, improve their overall well-being, and connect with their peers.

Meetings take place via Zoom on Wednesday evenings, from 6 to 7 p.m.,  and are facilitated by an LJAP Clinical Case Manager. The next session begins Jan. 17 and continues through March 6.
