While the wins may not be coming on a consistent basis, Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball coach Lindsey Newton likes the way her team is making adjustments and growing on both ends of the court that will hopefully bring more success and wins.

G-A, which battled a very tough Martin team (6-1) to the end before falling short 40-37 in its previous game, brought many of the same qualities that kept the team close in last Friday’s game against Gobles, only to fall short, 51-41 at G-A High School on Hall of Fame Night.

The Lady Rams, now 2-6, battled for loose balls, hustled for rebounds and had a great work ethic but could not over come the Tigers.

Watching her team respond and make adjustments to help the team remain close has been encouraging for Newton.

“They’re being coachable. They’re making adjustments when we need to make adjustments. That is everything that we are asking for. Having awareness of where the game is, and then being able to change it so we can get ahead or make adjustments,” points out the G-A coach.

Consecutive baskets by Maureen McBride and Jaidyn Klimp gave G-A a 15-12 lead at the 1:33 mark of the opening quarter but the visitors scored the last two baskets to take a 16-15 lead after one quarter.

Gobles held the Rams to just four points in the second quarter and enjoyed a 28-19 lead at halftime.

The Tigers quickly bumped the lead to double figures early in the third quarter, however a three-point basket by Mya Erskin with 5:54 left in the third stanza pulled the Lady Rams to 32-25.

Gobles outscored the Rams 10-4 the rest of the quarter to take a 42-29 advantage into the fourth quarter.

G-A managed to cut the Gobles lead to seven points, 47-40, with 3:08 left when Klimp knocked down a pair of free throws, but the Rams ended the game missing six shots and turning the ball over twice.

Despite the loss, Newton said it is encouraging how her team is putting themselves in a position to remain close.

“Their effort is intense. When they want to be intense, we need to be intense all of the time and that’s what we’re fighting for through box outs, through our pressure and through our defense. Learning to go to the ball, make good passes, smart passes and be in communication,” adds Newton.

Klimp led G-A in scoring with 16 points and Mya Erskin and Liliana Thompson each scored eight points.
