C-S JVs move to 8-2 with win over Burr Oak


The Climax-Scotts JV boys basketball team built a six-point lead at halftime and held on for a 32-27 win over Burr Oak January 19 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

The Panthers, now 8-2, held Burr Oak to just three baskets from the floor in the first half and entered the second half with a 15-9 lead.

Burr Oak pulled to within 21-16 after three quarters, but the Panthers matched the visitors’ 11-point output in the final quarter to hang on for the win.

Mason Shannon scored 11 points for C-S and Tye Chambers and Maddox Wyman each added eight points.

The Panther JVs return to action January 30 at Gobles at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Springport February 1 at 5:30 p.m.

C-S girls basketball team downs Burr Oak


The Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team moved to 6-1 with a 43-32 win over Burr Oak January 18 on the road.

Two weather related postponements that left the Lady Panthers idle for eight days, may have factored into a slow start, as Burr Oak enjoyed a 12-6 lead after one quarter.

C-S responded with three strong quarters, outscoring the home team 37-20 the rest of the way.

C-S used strong defense to overtake Burr Oak, holding the Bobcats to single digits in each of the final three quarters. C-S, knotted the game at 18-18 at halftime and took a 31-27 lead into the final stanza.

Lillie Edwards, behind a 4-for-7 performance from the floor, led the Panthers in scoring with 10 points.

Addy Reeves pulled down nine rebounds and came up with five steals and Annabelle Edwards contributed eight rebounds.

C-S-M finishes 4th at Hudson Tournament; 5 wrestlers place


The Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team competed in the ultra competitive Hudson Super 16 Tournament January 16 and came away with a fourth place finish out of 31 teams with 75 points.

The January 15 event was a Varsity B tournament while the Saturday tournament was a Varsity A event.

The co-op wrestling team had five placers in the Varsity A tournament, recognized as one of the most competitive tournaments in the state. Nine C-S-M wrestlers scored.

Haylen Buell, wrestling at the 132-pound weight class, led the way with a second place finish and 3-1 record on the day. He won two matches by decisions and one by a pin before settling for a second place finish when he was pinned in the championship match in 1:12.

Logan Gilbert (113) and Jackson Bagwell (150) both finished fourth, Max Bleeker (285) finished fifth and Malcolm Smith (175), with a 2-2 record, finished sixth.

Gilbert was 1-2, with his win coming by a pin.

Bagwell won two matches by decisions, he lost one match by a decision and he lost the third and fourth place match by a pin.

After dropping his first match by a pin, Max Bleeker rebounded to win his next three matches by two decisions and a pin.

Smith won his first two matches by decisions, and his third match by an 11-3 major decision, but fell in the fifth and sixth place match by a 3-0 decision.

Kristian Heighton (120) and Cole Reitz (120), both posted 2-2 records and Josh Walman (157), who was 1-2, did not place but earned wins.

Logan Curry (126), with a 2-1 record, Jonathan Owen (190), with a 3-1 record, and Matthew Holmes (138), who finished 3-1, all finished second in the JV tournament. Seth Toris (138), with a 4-1 record, finished fifth and  Ethan Seage (175), with a 1-1 record, finished sixth in the JV tournament.
