She succeeds longtime Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Daniel Spitz, who ended his pathology services contract with the county last October.
Pietrangelo’s wealth of experience, expertise and extensive background in forensic pathology and medicine will contribute significantly to the office's mission, officials said.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Mary E. Pietrangelo in her new role as the chief medical examiner,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. “Her experience and dedication to forensic pathology in and around Macomb County make her an invaluable asset to our team, and we look forward to the positive impact she will have in bringing her leadership to the Macomb County Medical Examiner's Office."
Pietrangelo has served as deputy medical examiner in both St. Clair County and Macomb County since 2012. Her professional journey also includes a tenure as a family physician in private practice and various roles in medical organizations and committees.
As a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Pietrangelo earned her M.D. and further specialized in forensic pathology during her fellowship at the Office of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner in Cleveland, Ohio.
She holds multiple certifications, including Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology in Forensic, Anatomic, and Clinical Pathology.
“The health department is confident that Dr. Pietrangelo's leadership will further enhance the forensic services provided to our community,” said Andrew Cox, Macomb County health and community services director. “We believe her expertise will contribute to the overall well-being and safety of Macomb County residents."
Pietrangelo is actively involved in several medical organizations, including the National Association of Medical Examiners, Michigan Association of Medical Examiners, American Academy of Forensic Sciences, College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to practice forensic pathology at the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office,” said. Pietrangelo. “I’ve learned much over the past years as a deputy medical examiner and I’m excited to be involved with the future of the office.”
