The 10th Annual Tulane Professional Football Negotiation Competition (TPFNC), held on January 26th and 27th, 2024, at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, drew in 48 teams from 35 different law schools and featured approximately 30 judges. This prestigious event, known for its focus on negotiation skills within the context of professional sports contracts, provided a platform for aspiring sports lawyers to showcase their expertise.

Representing Wayne State University Law School were third-year law students Zachary Revoldt and Joe Candela, guided by student coaches Hunter DeSantis and Alexander Papa. They engaged in three preliminary negotiation rounds against formidable opponents.
Each negotiation centered around the contract terms of soon-to-be free agent NFL players, including Brian Burns of the Carolina Panthers, Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals, and Antoine Winfield Jr. of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Reflecting on the experience, Revoldt stated, “The Tulane Pro Football Negotiation Competition was undeniably one of my favorite moments of law school.” He expressed gratitude to Wayne Law for the opportunity to compete on a national stage, emphasizing the invaluable networking opportunities and practical negotiation experience gained.

DeSantis praised Revoldt and Candela’s performance, highlighting the significance of their representation at the competition and expressing gratitude to Wayne Law for their support.

Papa echoed similar sentiments, describing the weekend as “unforgettable” and emphasizing the unique opportunity provided by Wayne Law to compete against top-tier law schools from across the country. He emphasized the excitement of watching his team engage in high-stakes negotiations and the rewarding nature of the networking opportunities with industry professionals.

Revoldt and Candela’s attendance at the Tulane competition was preceded by their victory in the Wayne State 2023 NFL Negotiation Competition, which occurred on November 18, 2023. This event, hosted by Wayne Law, paved the way for their participation in the prestigious Tulane event.

While Wayne Law’s team did not advance to the final rounds, they left a lasting impression with their skillful negotiation tactics and dedication to representing their university with pride.

The Tulane Football Negotiation Competition continues to serve as a premier event for aspiring sports lawyers, fostering skill development, networking opportunities, and a deep appreciation for the intricacies of contract negotiations within the realm of professional football.
