Boos Recreation Center major renovation project is underway

A staple of Jackson’s east side for more than 50 years, the Boos Recreation Center is receiving a major renovation project. Construction at the recreation center started last month and is expected to take place through late summer.

With sections of the building coming apart, construction crews will first stabilize the center. After the building is structurally sound, renovations will begin on the bathrooms, kitchen and gymnasium ceiling. The center will also receive new lighting and heating systems. Federal funds though Community Development Block Grants and the American Rescue Plan Act are being used for the renovation project.

Parks and Recreation Director Kelli Hoover is excited to see the work underway. “The Boos Center renovation is the culmination of five years of work to revitalize recreation programs and facilities in Loomis Park,” Hoover said. “This project will strengthen recreation services for Jackson’s east side and the entire community.”

The Boos Center is located in Loomis Park, which has received substantial improvements from the City of Jackson over the past five years. A new center entrance, playground, walking path, sledding hill, landscape design, basketball court, lighting system, and pavilion have rejuvenated the park. The center’s recreation programs are shifted to other facilities during the construction.
