36th District Court participates in events for National Judicial Outreach Week

In recognition of National Judicial Outreach Week from March 1-10, 2024, the 36th District Court participated in multiple events with the goal of bringing the court to the community.

On Thursday, March 5, Chief Judge William McConico and General Counsel Andrea Bradley-Baskin visited the 5th grade classroom of Ms. Blair at Chrysler Elementary School. The students were engaged and eager to learn about how a court operates, it’s function in society, and the different careers that one can find within a courthouse.

Also on Thursday, March 5, members of the 36th District Court Bench attended the Detroit Police Department’s 12th Precinct Community Meeting. Along with Community Affairs Specialist Merlin Martin, Judge E. Lynise Bryant, Judge Donald Coleman, Judge Shawn K. Jacque, Judge Christina V. Kennedy, Judge Monique A. Sharpe, and Magistrate Dawn M. White were present and spoke with members of the public. They gave brief presentations on their roles on the Bench, and took questions and comments from those gathered.

The 36th District Court hosted an Educational Open House for local high school students and law students. Nearly 150 participants attended from Renaissance High School, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and Wayne State University Law School.  They participated in courtroom observations and discussions with members of the Bench, engaged in a meet and greet/Q&A session where the students listened to presentations from judges and magistrates, and asked questions about how to pursue a career in law.

The Court recognizes and values the importance of engaging with members of the community.

“I have always made it a priority for representatives of the Court to seek out opportunities to interact with those we serve,” said McConico. Efforts to open the lines of communication with the public, such as National Judicial Outreach Week, are vital to the mission of the Court. I look forward to expanding our presence further in the coming years.”
