Attorney reappointed to the Board of Ethics



James Liggins Jr. of Kalamazoo has been appointed to the State Board of Ethics. The appointment was announced March 21 by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Liggins is senior counsel at Warner Norcross + Judd LLP, and has been with the firm since 2018. Previously, he was a partner at Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone, PLC, and an in-house litigation associate at Consumers Energy.

A University of Michigan alumnus, Liggins also serves on the executive committee and as vice chair of the board of directors for Bronson Healthcare Group, as a member of the American Hospital Association Committee on Governance, as past chair on the board of directors for the United Way of Southcentral Michigan, and as co-chair of the State Bar of Michigan Judicial Qualifications Committee.

Liggins, who earned his juris doctor from Michigan State University College of Law, also serves on the on the board of directors for the Greanleaf Trust and the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees.  

Liggins was reappointed to the State Board of Ethics for a term commencing March 21, 2024, and expiring February 7, 2028.

Bar Journal seeking input from Michigan attorneys


The State Bar of Michigan’s Bar Journal Committee is conducting its first survey in 10 years to gather input on its use of theme issues, current content, and ideas for possible future content.

The survey includes a maximum of 12 questions and takes 4 to 5 minutes to complete. “We want the Bar Journal to be the best it can be—to be a publication that attorneys read and look forward to receiving each month. … Please provide your input to help us make the Bar Journal more responsive to your needs,” the committee states.

Attorney explores ‘Working with Intellectually Disabled Clients’
The State Appellate Defender Office’s Criminal Defense Resource Center will continue its 2024 virtual lunchtime training with “Working with Intellectually Disabled Clients - Part I” on Tuesday, April 16, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Leading the training will be  attorney/capital mitigation specialist Juliet Yackel.
