Counselor's Corner: There is only one moment in life

Fred Cavaiani

Life is often a focus on the past or focus on the future. It just doesn’t work. Life is simply an embrace and an experience of this present moment. It can be a difficult task to realize this. But it  is most worthwhile. When I simply focus on this present moment, my whole physiological, psychological and spiritual systems slow down. I go into a journey of depth that is accurate and helpful. Life lived fully is a simple embrace of this present moment. The present moment is where I experience God.  It is also where I experience inner peace and joy because I am not trying to control anything. I am only becoming fully alive by this amazing experience of this present moment. As I write this article, I simply have to embrace what I am thinking and feeling at  this moment. It is so simple but I can complicate it by flitting into the past or the future. When I do this, I miss so much about life, which is always what is going on inside of my heart and head at this moment.

This moment is always filled with God’s love and God’s presence. It sounds so pious and so precious. But what I want to do is analyze it instead of just feel it and remain with  this present moment. There is so much goodness in this moment. So easy to forget this and minimize this. Life becomes so simple when I simply stay focused on this moment.

I have been writing these articles every two weeks since 1999. Each time I first ask myself, “What should I write about this week?” Then I just start writing about what is going on in me in this present moment. And all of a sudden, I have an article. When I don’t jump to the future or  retreat to  the past, amazing  things begin to be experienced in this moment. There is no reason to rush through life when I simply remain in this present, sacred moment. There are precious moments when I remain in this moment. It is like this moment becomes a sacred awareness of what is most important.

Some principles of life are so very simple. This present moment, well embraced, is where I discover wisdom and peace. I don’t have to search for love, wisdom and peace. It is right here in this present moment.

For the rest of my life on this planet, I simply want to focus on this moment and embrace  this moment. It is where I will find peace and experience God.
