The Reeths-Puffer Rockets got their guy to head up the boys' varsity basketball program.
And, he's a familiar face not only for Rocket fans, but for area sports fans.
J.R. Wallace, a former Rocket standout, has been hired to guide the Rockets' basketball team, dean of students and assistant athletic director. Wallace replaces Nate Aardema, who announced his resignation last month after three seasons at the helm of the Rockets.
Wallace, who graduated in 1989, comes to Reeths-Puffer after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Grand Valley State University. Not only was Wallace a part of the Lakers' success on the court, but for fostering character among the players and positive culture on the team.
"Coach Wallace is OUR guy," said Rocket athletic director Cliff Sandee. "His presence will instill stability, credibility and accountability within our school community. He is a goal-driven leader with a strong focus on building meaningful relationships."
Wallace will be introduced to the community at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 at the Dan Beckeman Arena.
For Wallace, he's eager to get started.
"I'm excited to lead this program to do great things on and off the court," said Wallace. "It's also nice to come home and grow my family in the exact same place that I grew up. We are looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new ones.
Following his standout career at Reeths-Puffer, Wallace took his basketball talents to Central Michigan University, where he contributed to a pair of Mid-American Conference titles and an appearance in the NCAA Men's Tournament. He turned professional and played in Argentina, Chile, Spain and Venezuela.
Wallace is married to his wife, Angel, and they have two sons: Lawrence Wallace IV (8) and Jrue (2). The couple also is anticipating the arrival of their third child.
