late season momentum


After dropping just its second game of the season May 2, it didn’t take the Galesburg-Augusta varsity baseball team long to get back into the win column.

The Rams improved to 14-2 overall and won their fifth game in their last six contests with 20-0 and 10-2 wins over Holland Black River May 6 on the road.

Jaden Fawcett teamed up with Alex Krugh on a combined no-hitter to improve to 4-0. Fawcett lowered his ERA to  0.85 ERA by tossing two and two-thirds scoreless and hitless frames to go with two walks and five strikeouts.

Krugh finished with an impressive two and one-third innings of work, allowing no hits, no runs and no walks with seven strikeouts.

Jonah Ranes, who had two doubles and drove in three runs, had three hits in the first game.

In the second game Ethan Gibson improved to 4-0 by scattering three hits and allowing no runs and no walks in three and two-thirds innings pitched. He threw 35 of his 48 pitches for strikes and struck out four batters.

Wes Hoffman, who drove in two runs, and Gibson, who had a double and drove in one run, each had two hits to lead G-A at the plate.

Rams split with Union City


The Galesburg-Augusta varsity baseball team settled for a split with Union City May 2.

G-A defeated the Chargers in the first game 12-1 behind a 17-hit attack, and dropped a 7-2 decision in the nightcap.

Ethan Gibson, who went six-for-seven and drove in two runs, and Alex Krugh, who was six-for-eight, including a five-hit, three RBI performance in the first game, led the G-A hitters in the twin bill.

Jaden Fawcett earned the win, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run with five strikeouts in five innings.

The Rams were unable to push a run across the plate until a two-run sixth inning in the second game, however by then the Chargers built a 7-0 lead and held on for the win.
Krugh (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three hits, three walks and two earned runs in just one inning of work.

Strong pitching and hitting helps Rams
to doubleheader sweep over Martin


G-A coach Tim Prince received good pitching in both games of a doubleheader sweep over Martin April 30.

The Rams pounded out 13 hits and Jaden Fawcett, Ethan Gibson and Wes Hoffman combined on a three-hitter in an 18-6 win in the first game, and Alex Krugh and Nolan Brewer teamed up for a three-inning no-hitter in the second game G-A won 16-1.

Krug, who had a double and three RBI, and Kameron Prince, who had a double and one RBI, each had three hits to lead the Rams at the plate in the first game.

Fawcett allowed just one hit and did not yield an earned run in three innings of work to record the win.

Krugh tossed a hitless two innings and struck out six to earn the win in the second game.

Brewer continued the strong pitching by allowing no hits and one walk with two strikeouts in one inning of work.

Brewer and Prince, who drove in three runs, each had two hits.

15-1 win over Allegan snaps 6-game
losing streak for Lady Rams


A six-run first inning got the Galesburg-Augusta varsity softball team off to a strong start and the Lady Rams never looked back, posting a 15-1 win over Allegan May 2 on senior night at G-A High School.

The two teams were tied 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning of the second game when the game was called off because of lightning. G-A coach Jeremy Johnson said the school districts are attempting to reschedule a doubleheader.

Suzanna Nichols, who drove in two runs and had two stolen bases, and Haven Bowsher, who drove in two runs and also had two stolen bases, each collected three hits in the first game.

Liliana Thompson allowed just a first inning single and struck out eight Tigers in five innings pitched to earn the win for the Rams, now 4-14.

Martin tops Lady Rams twice


A potent Martin hitting attack piled up double digit hit totals in a pair of wins over G-A April 30 at Martin.

Martin totaled 23 hits in a 18-9 win in the first game and had 16 hits in a 21-1 win in the second game.

Kyia Dolph, who had two doubles and two RBI, led G-A at the plate in the first game with three hits.

The Rams managed just four hits in the second game, singles by Maureen McBride, Rhyann Wilson (1 RBI), Caitlyn Valadez and a double by Breanna Keene.

The Galesburg-Augusta tennis team suffered an 8-0 loss to Allegan April 30 at G-A High School.

Karlee Nigg, at No. 2 singles, and Peyton Newton, at No. 3 singles, had competitive matches with both winning three games in one set.

G-A track teams continue
to show improvement


While both the Galesburg-Augusta girls and boys track teams did not place first at the Parchment Relays May 3, the teams combined for seven top 3 finishes and seven personal records.

Plainwell won the mens event with 96 points and Otsego finished first in the eight-team womens event with 98 points. The G-A men finished in seventh place with 48 points, while the Lady Rams totaled 32 points.

The 800-meter sprint medley relay team of Caden Smeltzer, Ben Smeltzer, John Klimp and Adam Hubbard had the highest finish for G-A, posting a second place finish with a time of 1:41.71.

G-A junior Jaidyn Klimp recorded a first place finish for the Lady Rams with a distance of 14’9” in the long jump.

G-A track teams top Holland Black River


Both the Galesburg-Augusta men and women track teams earned victories over Holland Black River May 1 at G-A High School.

The men, behind nine first place finishes, defeated Black River 85-37, and the women, who accumulated eight first place finishes, won by the score of 58-24.

John Klimp secured first place finishes in the 400-meter dash (54.76), shot put (40’10”) and discus (93’4”), to pace the men.

Other first place finishes for G-A came from Carter Stevens, who won the 1600-meter run with a personal record time of 4:52.66 and the 3200-meter run (12:09.46), Patrick Armock in the 110-meter hurdles, with a personal record time of 17.51, Conor Bortolussi, in the 300-meter hurdles (47.98), Kaymen Graybeal, in the long jump with a personal record jump of 19’ 2”, the 4x100-meter relay team made up of Levi Born, Adam Hubbard, Ben Smeltzer and Caden Smeltzer (47.22), the 4x200-meter relay team composed of Born, Adam Hubbard, Ben Smeltzer and John Klimp (1:34.74) and the 4x800-meter relay team made up of Carter Stevens, Kaymen Graybeal, Landon Bouchard and Owen Pfeiffer (9:46.73).

Ellesa Calendar and Jaidyn Klimp each had three first place finishes to lead the Lady Rams.

Calendar won the discus with a personal record throw of 87’6”, the 110-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 19.59 and the 300-meter hurdles (55.82).

Klimp placed first in the 400-meter dash (1:02.19), the high jump (4’0”) and the long jump (15’10.5”).

The other G-A first place finishes came from Brooklyn James in the 100-meter dash with a personal record time of 14.41 and 200-meter dash (30.40) and Caitlyn Valadez in the shot put (30’6.5”).

Boys, girls fall twice at Gobles SAC meet


Both the Galesburg-Augusta girls and boys track teams fell short in two meets at a SAC meet at Gobles April 29.

Gobles defeated the G-A girls 91-40 and the Lady Rams were clipped by Delton-Kellogg, 86-36.

The G-A boys fell short against Gobles, 66.33-66.67 and lost to Delton-Kellogg, 77-60.

Jaidyn Klimp earned first place finishes in the 200-meter dash (28.02), 400-meter dash (1:01.62), high jump (4’10”) and long jump (15’7.5”) to lead the Lady Rams.

The Rams, led by three first place finishes by John Klimp, enjoyed six first place finishes.

Klimp won the 200-meter dash with a personal record time of 23.82, the shot put, with a throw of 42’9”, and the discus, with a personal record toss of 119’2”.
