C-S track teams aiming for
state qualifiers at regionals


Members of both the Climax-Scotts High School boys and girls track teams will be aiming to qualify for the Division 4 regionals at Concord May 17 at 3 p.m.

The top two finishers in each event and athletes who meet a qualifying standard qualify for the state finals.

C-S coach Dave Lodes said the 4x100-meter relay team made up of Ryan Dehaan, Luke Lawrence, Miles Shannon and Chase VanMiddlesworth currently own the second fastest time in Division 4, but defeated Gobles May 4, which has the fasted posted time.

The C-S coach adds the 4x200-meter relay team made up of Chase VanMiddlesworth, Luke Lawrence, Jordan Grove, Josh Walman is ranked and Luke Lawrence in the hurdles is ranked high.

Climax-Scotts High School senior Miles Shannon set a new school record in the long jump  at an SCAA event hosted by C-S May 1.

Shannon recorded a distance of 22’ 0.75 in his second jump of the day.

The old school record was 20’11.25” set by Alex Lodes in 2012.

Both the Panther men and women were in action May 4 at the Centreville Invitational. The boys finished in third place out of 10 teams with 760 points and the girls totaled 315 points, good for eighth place out of 10 teams.

Constantine won the mens event with 1013 points and Centreville, with 1015 points, finished first in the women’s event.

The 4x200-meter relay team, made up of Chase VanMiddlesworth, Luke Lawrence, Jordan Grove and Josh Walman placed first with a time of 1:33.63 and Shannon won the long jump with a jump of 20’04.00”.

The quartet of Paige Amos, Sophie Braithwaite, Lillie Edwards and Annabelle Edwards helped the 4x200-meter relay team to C-S’ highest finish at the event in third place finish with a time of 1:59.88.

C-S boys track team finishes 2nd, girls 3rd at SCAA event


The Climax-Scotts boys track team settled for a second place finish and the girls finished in third place at an SCAA event hosted by C-S May 1.

The boys, who had six first place finishes, finished with 152 points behind first place finishing Hillsdale Academy, which totaled 209 points in the eight-team event. The Lady Panthers, who had two first place finishes, had 77.5 points. Hillsdale Academy, with 250.5 points, won the six-team girls’ event and Pittsford (152) finished second.

Chase VanMiddlesworth placed first in two individual events and helped two C-S relay teams to first place finishes to pace the boys. The Panther junior won the 100-meter dash with a personal record time of 11.48 and 200-meter dash with a time of 23.46. He joined Logan Gilbert, Jordan Grove and Like Lawrence on the 4x100-meter relay team in a first place effort with a time of 46.86 and then teamed up with Jordan Grove, Luke Lawrence and Josh Walman to win the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:35.86.

Other C-S first place finishes came from Luke Lawrence, in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 15.84, Ryan Pejakovich in the shot put with a throw of 41’7”, and Miles Shannon, in the long jump with a personal record distance of 22’0.75”.

Overall, the Panther boys totaled 27 personal records.

The Lady Panthers earned first place finishes in two relay events and had six top two finishes overall.

The 4x100-meter relay team made up of Paige Amos, Sophie Braithwaite, Lillie Edwards and Addy Reeves placed first with a time of 56.48 and the same quartet won the 4x200-meter relay team with a time of 1:59.04.

Paige Amos had second place finishes in the 100-meter (13.76) and 200-meter (28.28, personal record) dashes and in the 300-meter hurdles (59.33) and Addy Reeves place second in the long jump (14’2”).

Lady Panthers hold on for
win over Union City


The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team opened a 20-14 lead entering the top of the seventh inning but had to hold off a Union City rally in a 20-18 victory at C-S Jr./Sr. High School May 3.

While C-S, now 6-10, took advantage of eight Union City errors that led to 10 unearned runs, Union City enjoyed 14 walks that led to plenty of activity on the base paths.

Addy Reeves, who drove in four runs, collected four hits to pace C-S at the plate.

Reeves pitched all seven innings and gave up 10 hits, 13 earned runs and 14 walks with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Lady Panthers fall to Athens


Athens managed just three hits but took advantage of 12 walks and three Climax-Scotts errors in a 12-6 win over the Panthers May 2 at Athens High School.

C-S starting pitcher Addy Reeves only allowed two hits across six innings and struck out seven batters but she struggled with her control, walking 12 Indians.

Addi Dzwik (double), Holly Talbert (triple, 1 RBI), Gina Smith (1 RBI), Lylah Parrish and Jaise Lane (3 RBI) collected C-S’ hits.

Burr Oak pitchers stymie C-S bats

Burr Oak pitchers held Climax-Scotts to a total of just five hits in two losses at Burr Oak April 30.

Rylie Altman’s two hits was all the offense C-S managed in a 10-0 setback in the first game and the Panthers mustered just three hits in a 19-4 loss in the second game.

Seven C-S errors led to six unearned runs in the first game.

Addy Reeves pitched all six innings and suffered the loss, allowing seven hits, four earned runs and eight walks to go with seven strikeouts for C-S in the opener.

C-S pitchers struggled with control issues in the second game, walking 19 Burr Oak batters.

Starting pitcher Holly Talbert took the loss, allowing three hits in three innings, but she walked 15 Bobcat batters.

Addi Dzwik, who had one RBI, Makenzie Grimm and Jaise Lane had the C-S hits.

Baseball team remains hot despite loss


A six-run sixth inning erased a five-run deficit and propelled Centreville to a 6-5 win over the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team May 3 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

Despite the loss, C-S entered its May 7 game against Colon as winners in eight of the last nine games with a record of 13-4.

Three singles and a double by Centreville combined with a C-S error and wild pitch were factors in Centreville’s big sixth inning.

A single by Logan Gilbert to start off the bottom of the seven, a ground out, followed by a wild pitch that advanced the C-S junior to third and a walk to Gavin Eyre put the tying runner on third base and winning runner on first, however Centreville retired the next two batters to secure the win.

Gavin Eyre suffered the loss in relief, allowing one earned run, two hits, and one walk with three strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings worked.

Starting pitcher Carter Dzwik scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run with no walks and nine strikeouts in five and one-third innings worked.

C-S offense picks up in 18-1 win


Ben Crocker led a 16-hit attack and Logan Gilbert and Lincoln Dzwik teamed up for a four-inning no-hitter in Climax-Scotts’ 18-1 win over Athens May 2 on the road.

Crocker blasted two home runs and drove in four runs to pace the Panthers.

Gilbert had three hits, including a double and three RBI for Panther coach Kevin Langs, who saw eight different players in his lineup record hits.

Gilbert was the starting and winning pitcher, improving his record to 3-1 with the win. The Panther junior allowed no hits and no walks with three strikeouts over the first two innings. He threw 17 of his 21 pitches for strikes.

Dzwik tossed a strong hitless inning, striking out one batter with no walks.

The Panthers held Burr Oak hitless in both games of a doubleheader April 30,

The Panthers took advantage of 15 walks issued by Burr Oak pitchers in a 16-0 win in the first game and then walked 12 more times in a 15-0 victory in the second game.

Ben Crocker had a double, three RBI and two stolen bases in the first game.

Gavin Eyre pitched the first inning and earned the win in the three-inning game. He did not allow a hit, walked one batter and struck out three.

Hunter Piper had a strong outing in relief, allowing no hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings worked.

Kai Brown led the Panthers at the plate in the second game, recording two hits and three RBI.

Ben Nelson earned his first win of the year on the mound, tossing three hitless innings. He did not issue a walk and struck out eight of the nine batters he faced.
