Panthers hope to continue
hot play into post season


The Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team took a five-game winning streak into a May 22 home game against Galesburg-Augusta after the team clipped Colon 12-2 at C-S May 20.

The Panthers, sporting an impressive 18-5 overall record, entered the May 22 Cross River Rivalry game against the Rams as winners in five straight games.

C-S will close out the regular season with a makeup home doubleheader against Camden-Frontier May 28 at 4 p.m. before hosting Union City in the district tournament June 1 at
1:30 p.m.

C-S split with Union City earlier this season, falling 13-1 in the first game before capturing a 2-1 win in the second game.

The Chargers began play this week with a 9-12 record.

A nine-run sixth inning broke open the game for C-S in its 12-2 win over Colon.

Kasey Carman, who had three RBI, Carter Dzwik, who had one RBI and Jacob Sheets, who also had one RBI, each had two hits for C-S.

Logan Gilbert scattered five hits and allowed one earned run and no walks in six innings to post the win. The Panther junior struck out six Magi.

Gavin Eyre tossed a hitless seventh inning and struck out all three batters he faced.

Panthers top Frankfort

The Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team followed a monumental win over Mendon May 15 that clinched the SCAA West Division championship with a 15-4 victory over Frankfort May 18 at Cornerstone University to claim the battle of the Panthers trophy.

The Panthers used a seven-run third inning to pull away from Frankfort.

Gavin Eyre, who had two RBI and a triple, and Logan Gilbert, who drove in one run, both had two hits to pace C-S at the plate.

Ben Crocker hit an inside the park grand slam home run to right field accounting for his four RBI.

Logan Gilbert pitched the first two innings and earned the win. He allowed one hit, one walk and struck out four batters.

Carter Dzwik pitched the final four innings, allowing two earned runs but he struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk.

C-S claims 4th straight SCAA West Division title


A 4-0 win over Mendon May 15 clinched the SCAA West Division championship for the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team.

The five senors on the team, Tyler Smith, Chandler Latimer, Jacob Sheets, Josh Walman ad Ben Crocker finish their careers with four straight SCAA West Division championships.

Both teams entered the game with 7-0 West Division records.

C-S captured the win behind a combined no-hitter by Gavin Eyre and Carter Dzwik.

Eyre was dominant, giving up just two walks while striking out 15 batters to improve his record to 3-4. The Panther hurler retired 18 straight batters after C-S committed a one out error in the top of the first inning.

Dzwik struck out one batter in two-thirds innings pitched.

C-S was held to five hits, with Jacob Sheets totaling two, including a double.

C-S pitching shuts down Bellevue


Logan Gilbert and Lincoln Dzwik combined on a one-hitter and seven different batters in the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball teams’ lineup produced hits in a 8-0 victory over Bellevue May 14 at Bellevue.

Gilbert, the starting and winning pitcher, did not allow a hit over four innings pitched. He walked two and struck out one.

Dzwik followed with three innings of one hit ball, allowing four walks to go with four strikeouts.

Ben Crocker, who drove in two runs, and Gavin Eyre each had two hits to place a nine-hit attack.

C-S boys qualify for state finals in
8 events, girls have 7 state qualifiers


The Climax-Scotts boys track team had a very impressive day at the Division 4 regionals May 17 at Concord, earning a second place finish, while qualifying for the Division 4 State Finals in eight events.

The Lady Panthers, who finished ninth out of 15 teams, will send seven athletes to the State Finals, competing in four events.

The C-S boys finished 10 points (80) behind regional champions Concord (90).

C-S will send a total of 12 student-athletes to the Division 4 State Finals June 1 at Baldwin Middle School, which Panther coach Dave Lodes felt was the largest contingent of C-S athletes he has seen qualify fot the State Finals.

Miles Shannon qualified for the State Finals in four events at the regionals. The Panther senior joined Luke Lawrence, Ryan DeHaan, and Chase VanMiddlesworth for a first place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.53; he qualified as a member of the first place finishing 4x200-meter relay team that finished with a time of 1:33.45 and also included Jordan Grove, Luke Lawrence and Chase VanMiddlesworth; he qualified in the high jump with a first place finish and jump of 6’3”; and he qualified in the long jump with a third place finish and distance of 19’10.75”.

Besides qualifying as a member of the 4x100 and 4x200-meter-relay teams, Chase VanMiddlesworth qualified in the 200-meter dash where he finished third with a time of 23.32.
C-S junior Luke Lawrence also qualified for the state finals in three events. He won the 110-meter, 39” hurdle competition with a personal record time of 15.82 and was a member of the state qualifying 4x100- and 4x-200-meter relay teams.

Ryan Pejakovich qualified for the state finals in the shot put with a second place finish and distance of 41’2.5”.

Sophie Braithwaite qualified for the state finals with a fourth place finish and personal record time of 13.43 in the 100-meter dash, the 4x100-meter relay team made up of Paige Amos, Braithwaite, Lillie Edwards and Paige Fraley, qualified for the state finals with a time of 54.83, the 4x200-meter relay team composed of Amos, Braithwaite, Annabelle Edwards and Lillie Edwards qualified for the state finals with a time of 1:55.31, amd Addy Reeves qualified for the state finals with a distance of 15’7.5” in the long jump.

Lady Panthers fall to Colon;
face Martin in district game June 1


The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team out-hit Colon 10-4, but the Lady Panthers could not overcome four errors in a 10-3 loss to the Magi May 20 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

The loss sent C-S into the Cross River Rivalry game against Galesburg-Augusta May 22 with a 10-12 record.

Holly Talbert, with three hits and one RBI, led a 10-hit attack for C-S. Gina Smith added two hits and drove in one run.

Addy Reeves only allowed four hits over seven innings, but she walked 10 batters. Four C-S errors led to six unearned runs for Colon.

The Lady Panthers will face Martin at noon June 1 in the district tournament at Martin.

Lady Panthers score late run to defeat no. 3 ranked Mendon

The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team broke a 4-4 tie with a run in the  bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a 5-4 win over No. 3 ranked Mendon at Kalamazoo College May 15.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings, however C-S broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Mendon responded with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie game at 4-4.

The Lady Panthers started the winning rally when Ashlynn Gilbert reached first base on an error, advanced to third on Gina Smith’s single and then Gilbert scored on a two out wild pitch.

Addy Reeves earned the win, allowing just one earned run, six hits, and seven walks with seven strikeouts.

Lady Panthers Sweep Doubleheader Against Bellevue

The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team produced double digit hit and run totals in a pair of wins over Bellevue May 14 at Bellevue.

The Lady Panthers banged out 10 hits and took advantage of 16 walks and four Bellevue errors in an 18-3 win in the first game before taking advantage of seven Bellevue errors and pounding out 10 hits again in a 23-8 win in the nightcap.

Holly Talbert, who had a double and drove in two runs, Ashlynn Gilbert, who drove in three runs, Gina Smith, who had three RBI and Makenzee Grimm, who had one RBI, each had two hits in the first game for the Lady Panthers.

Addy Reeves scattered two hits and allowed one earned run and five walks in five innings pitched to earn the win on the mound. She struck out seven Broncos.

Seven Bellevue errors led to 16 Panther unearned runs in the second game.

Rylie Altman, with two RBI, Makenzee Grimm, who drove in one run, Lylah Parrish, who had four RBI and Addy Reeves, who drove in four runs, all had two hits apiece.

Holly Talbert allowed just a first inning single and one earned run to secure the win in the second game. She walked 10 batters and struck out two.

C-S golf team finishes 6th
at 2 SCAA events


The Climax-Scotts golf team finished sixth at two league golf matches recently.

C-S only had two golfers and did not have enough golfers to score as a team in a league meet May 13 when the team was 2-5, leaving the team with an 11-17 league record and 12-18 overall mark.

The team finished sixth with a 2-5 record at a league match May 6.

Both matches were at Riverside Golf Course.

Cole Reitz, with a 45, and Cole Curtis, with a 56, were C-S participants in the May 13 event, won by Hillsdale Academy with a 174.

C-S finished with a 199 in the May 6 event, won by Hillsdale Academy with a 171.

Cole Reitz and Cole Curtis were low scorers for C-S with 48s, Ryan Pejakovich finished with a 49, Jackson Bagwell shot a 54 and Carter Pio finished with a 57.

The team was scheduled to participated in the Division 4 regionals May 30 at Coldwater Golf Course.
