Forensic biology and DNA analysis
focus of CDAM webinar


The Criminal Defense Association of Michigan will present a webinar on “Forensic Biology/DNA Analysis” Friday, May 31, from noon to 2 p.m.

The online program will be presented by Erich Speckin, forensic document analyst, ink dating specialist; and Julie Howenstine, forensic DNA expert, biological evidence examiner.  

Both are staff members of Speckin Forensic Laboratories, an international forensic firm specializing in consulting with plaintiff and defense lawyers involving a variety of issues including forgery, examinations of medical and business records, analytical and forensic chemistry, crime scene reconstruction and computer forensics.

Bench Bar Culinary Challenge on tap


Grilling for Good returns with the 15th Annual Bench Bar Culinary Challenge, set for Thursday, June 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the home of retired Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Elizabeth L. Gleicher.

This annual charitable event features a friendly cook-off between teams from the bench and bar.  All proceeds benefit Alternatives for Girls and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation’s scholarship fund.  

This year, the teams consist of:

• Grilled from the Bench—Oakland County 46th District Court Judge Michelle Friedman Appel, Oakland County 45th District Court Judge Jaimie Powell Horowitz, Macomb County Probate Court Judge Sara Schimke, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Faunce, Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Michelle Rick, and Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Kristina Robinson Garrett.

• Grilled by the Hour—Lori Henderson, Chris Schloff, State Appellate Defender Office, and Varnum with head chef Julia Perkins.tition.

 Jobless insurance appeals tips provided


The Michigan Judicial Institute and will present the webinar “Unemployment Insurance Appeals—Tips and Tools for Judges Webinar” on Wednesday, June 12, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom.

This webinar will share the latest unemployment law updates as well as identify key sources of authority, research tools, and advice for assisting unrepresented claimants through the appeal process.
