Two G-A records fall at SAC Championships

By Dale Martin

While both the Galesburg-Augusta boys and girls track teams finished in the middle of the pack at the SAC Championships at Gobles May 21, both teams enjoyed some memorable moments.

Two long standing G-A records fell at the meet, the girls set five personal records and the boys had four personal records.

The first school record to fall was the men’s 4x200-meter relay. The previous record was established 38 years ago in 1986 by Nate Kitchen, Dave Meadows, Troy Pierce and Rory Stace at 1:33.5. After just falling short breaking the record three times this season, John Klimp, Ben Smeltzer, Adam Hubbard and Levi Born bettered the mark with a time of 1:33.12 for the boys’ lone first place finish at the event.
The second record to fall was also set 38 years ago in 1986. Sue Walters Arrick set the women’s 200-meter dash record with a time of 26.5 seconds. Ram junior, Jaidyn Klimp set the new record with a personal record time of 26.17 seconds for a second place finish at the SAC Championships.

The 1978 and 79 seasons were very special for the G-A track teams. The women set records in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter. dash, 400-meter. dash, 800-meter run, 100-meter high hurdles, 4x200-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay and high jump. That’s 8 records of the 17 events. The men set records in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs and the 300-meter hurdles during that same time period.
Klimp record the Lady Rams’ lone first place finish at the SAC Championships, sporting a personal record distance of 16’7.25” in the long jump.

While she did not advance out of the preliminaries, Brooklyn James set a personal record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.32. She also set a personal record in the long jump with a distance of 12’4.25”.

Ellesa Callender set a personal record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.49.

While they didn’t make it out of the preliminaries, Ben and Caden Smeltzer set personal records in the 200-meter dash with times of 24.16 and 25.29 respectively.

The boys 4x100-meter relay team made up of Levi Born, Adam Hubbard, Ben Smeltzer, Caden Smeltzer had their best time of the year (46.11) and Jeremiah Mann set a new personal record in the high jump with a height of 5’8”.

G-A coach Paul Schab said Carter Stevens, in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs and Landon Bouchard, in the 800-meter run, had good runs in some hot conditions and scored points for G-A.

The G-A 4x200-meter relay team from left Levi Born, Ben Smeltzer, Adam Hubbard and John Klimp, set a new school record in the event at the SAC Championships with a time of 1:33.12.

Jaidyn Klimp aiming for all-state medals

By Bruce Rolfe

Galesburg-Augusta High School junior Jaidyn Klimp has already earned an all-state medal in the 400-meter dash, however at this year’s Division 3 State Finals at Kent City June 1 the Ram junior will not only be aiming for another all-state medal in the same event, but vying for a top eight finish and all-state medal in the 200-meter dash as well.

Klimp is the lone State Finals qualifier for the Rams.

G-A coach Paul Schab feels Klimp is peaking at the right time, but said, “we have some work to do to get ready for state finals.”

Klimp qualified for the State Finals in the 200-meter dash with a second place finish at the regionals and career best time of 26.98, and the 400-meter dash with a second place finish and time of 59.99 at the regionals, which was the second fastest time of her career.

Klimp will be the 13th seed out of a field of 33 runners in the 200-meter dash. The 8th seed has a time of 26.53.

The G-A junior will be the seventh seed in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.99.

“Jaidyn’s times in both events put her in a very good position to medal again,” adds the Ram coach.

Klimp also qualified for the state finals in the 400-meter dash last year when she earned an all-state medal with a fifth place finish and personal record time of 59.68.

Klimp was a state finalist in the 400-meter dash her freshman year, finishing in 12th place with a time of 1:01.44, just under two seconds behind the eighth place winner.
