August primary includes contested race for Climax Township clerk; fire millage also on ballot

By Bruce Rolfe

With the deadline already passed to file a nomination petition and affidavit of identity for the August 6 Primary Election, one local race will be contested.

The deadline to submit a declaration of intent form with the County Clerk as a write-in for the August 6 Primary Election is Friday, August 2, at 4 p.m.

In Climax Township, the seats of all five Climax Township Board members are up for election. Those seats are currently held by trustees incumbents Cheryl Bates and Richard Thierjung, incumbent supervisor Trent Piper, incumbent treasurer Steve Walman, and current clerk Marcia Lewis. Lewis has already announced she will not be running for re-election.

On the August 6 ballot Murat Bates will be running against Sarah DeBoer for the clerk position.

Piper, Walman, Cheryl Bates, and Thierjung will be running unopposed.

In Charleston Township, the seats of supervisor Jerry Vander Roest, clerk Alese LePert, treasurer Kim Balkema, trustee Chris Balkema, and Brian Mravich expire.

Joshua Balkema filed paperwork to be on the August 6 ballot running for one of the trustee positions. VanderRoest and Kim Balkema are also on the ballot.

Since Pavilion Township became a charter township, there will be four trustees compared to two before the township became a charter township. On the August 6 primary ballot will be incumbent supervisor John Speeter, incumbent clerk Karen Siegwart, incumbent treasurer Robyn Maxson, and incumbent trustees Greg Thomas, and Edward Cagney. Dan Frizzo and David Steffens will be on the ballot running unopposed for the two new trustee positions.

In Wakeshma Township, all five trustee seats expire. On the ballot running unopposed is incumbent supervisor Jason Gatlin, incumbent treasurer Leanne Munn, and incumbent trustees Barbara Thole and Trevor Bennett. The seat clerk Shawn Fritz holds also expires, however no candidates filed paper work to be on the August 6 ballot.

Climax Township voters will also face a 1.5 mills, 10-year millage (2014 through 2023) renewal proposal to fund the Climax Township Fire Department on the August 6 Primary Election ballot.

While there will be expiring seats on the Climax Village Council and Climax-Scotts Community School Board of Education, those positions will not be on the August 6 Primary ballot, but will be on the November general election ballot.

The seats of Climax Village Council interim President David Miller, trustees Nick Ludwig, Janet Sutherland, Arlene VonHout, and Alyssa Schwili will expire in November. Miller was a trustee when he was appointed interim president after former village president Jim Cummings resigned. Schwili was appointed to Miller’s trustee seat and VonHout was appointed to the seat trustee Denise Kenney occupied after she resigned in May.

The terms of current trustees Joline Chaney and Carolyn Kelly expire in 2026.

The four year terms for Climax-Scotts School Board members Lori Bagwell, Jacqueline Longman, Trent Piper, and Sue Reichert will expire in November.

July 23 at 4 p.m. is the deadline for candidates for village offices and school board candidates to file an Affidavit of Identity and a non-partisan nominating petition. Withdrawal deadline elapses at 4 p.m. on July 26.

Friday, October 25, at 4 p.m. a write-in candidates’ declaration of intent form for the November election is due to the respective filing official.

The deadline for a county or local ballot question on the November ballot, filed with the applicable local or county clerk, is July 30.
