Schools partner for virtual event
on holistic defense


Wayne State University’s Law School and School of Social Work will present “Holistic Defense Initiative: Virtual Lunch Talk” on Wednesday, June 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Attendees will learn more about the  initiative with speakers Dan Ellman, assistant clinical professor and director of Externships (Law School), and Athena Kheibari, assistant professor and holistic defense coordinator (School of Social Work).

Holistic defense is an approach to legal representation that recognizes the many social and legal challenges that can drive an individual into the criminal legal system, and the collateral or enmeshed consequences that may result from an individual’s contact with the system.

Straker Bar plans Trailblazers Dinner


The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association will host its 30th annual Trailblazers Dinner on Thursday, June 13, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Westin Southfield Hotel, 1500 Town Center in Southfield.

The theme for the year is “Disruptors in the legal community: Fighting to redress injustice and inequality.”

The Trailblazers Awards Ceremony and Scholarship Dinner is the marquee event of the association and is used to honor outstanding individuals who have blazed the trail in the legal community and beyond.

Changes in juvenile justice law examined


The Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) will conduct a webinar on “The Changing Landscape of Youth Defense” Friday, June 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

With the passage of the juvenile justice reform bills last year and some recent case law, many changes are coming to juvenile delinquencies that will impact how to represent young clients.

The webinar will take a look at:

• Upcoming statutory and court rule changes to delinquencies
• New strategies for representing youth
• How recent case law impacts youth defense

Speaking at the webinar will be Joshua Pease, Youth Defense Project director at the State Appellate Defender Office. He leads efforts to reform representation of youth in delinquency cases across the state at all levels.

Cost for the webinar is $60 for CDAM member, $75 for non-members.
