The organization hopes to increase awareness for Michiganders on how their voting can impact the judicial system and the long-term consequences of votes. The educational program is supported by slides, scripts and handouts, all offered free of charge. Michiganders who watch the program will be able to request to share the presentation with special interest groups, organizations, schools or college students. Those that are unable to watch the Zoom meeting can also request the opportunity to watch the presentation later. Requests for the Zoom link should be made at mail@ncjwmi.org.
“When people vote at the ballot box, or by mail, their decisions have far-reaching consequences for the law,” said NCJW|MI President Sallyjo Levine. “Decisions in recent years by the Supreme Court have highlighted the need for judges who uphold core constitutional values and who are fair and independent. Their decisions on court cases impact all our lives.”
She explained that it was important to understand the views of a political candidate on all topics, so that interest and values important to voters are supported by those candidates once in office.
While federal judges are nominated by the president, the Senate votes to confirm a nominee to a lifetime appointment. Courts Matter encourages Michiganders to act, by contacting their senators to support well-qualified and diverse nominees dedicated to fairness and impartiality.
Courts Matter is particularly eager to reach young voters, so the presentation includes the history of voting and the importance of voting for issues people care about. Its goal is to also get the vote out, particularly amongst young adults. Teachers at schools, colleges and universities are encouraged to arrange a presentation for their groups.
Founded in 2017 and sponsored by National Council of Jewish Women Inc., the mission of Courts Matter Michigan is to ensure a well-functioning federal judiciary composed of lifetime-appointed federal judges who are well qualified, diverse, and impartial, and who are committed to upholding our core constitutional values, such as equality, freedom, and justice for all.
