She is one of eight law students from around the country named last week to serve a two-year term. As a member of the NAC, Laporte will conduct outreach and provide feedback on Equal Justice Works programs and initiatives. Eight law professors from the United States will serve alongside the students.
Founded by law students in 1986, Equal Justice Works brings together a network of law students, lawyers, legal services organizations, and supporters to promote a lifelong commitment to public service and equal justice. During her term, Laporte will meet with law students and law professors in the Midwest to promote and evaluate Equal Justice Works programs and resources. Her feedback will help shape future initiatives.
“I am eager to contribute my skills and passion to the organization and make the most of this opportunity,” Laporte said. “I am beyond grateful to have been offered one of the positions.”
A child of Haitian immigrants and fluent in Haitian-Creole, Laporte is interning in her hometown of Miami this summer at the Family Defense Program of the Americans for Immigrant Justice.
“It is important for me to give back to the community that raised me,” Laporte said. “I know how intimidating and stressful the immigration process can be. I have watched many family members go through it. And now that I am in a position to help other immigrants, I want to do that.”
Laporte will apply the experience gained through her summer internship to her service on the NAC, she said.
She is a 2023 Dean’s Fellow, a member of the program’s second cohort. The Dean’s Fellows program is designed for students with a demonstrated commitment to public interest work. It helps fellows explore career opportunities across a wide range of legal disciplines and make an immediate impact in their communities through summer internship experiences.
“Carschana exemplifies the commitment of Spartan lawyers to give back to their communities in Michigan and beyond,” said Interim Dean Michael Sant’Ambrogio. “Through our Dean's Fellows and other programs, we are helping students launch careers in the public interest and public service.
“We're so proud that Carschana will use her skills this summer to help those in her community and that she will contribute her voice and perspective to NAC.”
