Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System (MAACS) accepting applications to join the roster; the deadline is September 13

The Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System (MAACS) is accepting applications from criminal defense attorneys with all levels of criminal appellate experience. MAACS roster attorneys receive reasonable and reliable attorney fees, investigation and litigation support services, legal research assistance, and a variety of resources and training.

MAACS attorneys represent indigent individuals appealing criminal convictions and delinquency adjudications from all 83 counties in the state. Attorneys may represent individuals in appeals from pleas, resentencings, and trials, as well as in post-conviction and post-adjudication proceedings. Representation will take place in circuit courts, Michigan Court of Appeals, and Michigan Supreme Court.

Roster attorneys are offered complimentary training opportunities which include an annual virtual Appellate Defender Fall Training, an annual in-person three-day Appellate Writing Workshop, biweekly case rounds, and more. New roster attorneys must complete an orientation program before accepting assignments, and all roster attorneys must complete 12 hours annually of relevant CLE training.
