MDHHS Behavioral Health Internship Stipend Program to help increase Michigan’s behavioral health workforce

As part of its effort to increase access to behavioral health services for Michigan residents, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is offering a stipend program to student interns enrolled in accredited behavioral health bachelor's, master's or doctorate programs.

The Behavioral Health Internship Stipend Program provides up to $15,000 per student intern to cover costs such as tuition, fees, books and living expenses, allowing them to concentrate on professional growth and practical experience.

Students pursuing degrees resulting in any of the following behavioral health professions are eligible: marriage or family therapist, behavior analyst, social worker, professional counselor or psychologist.

MDHHS has allocated $3.5 million for the program, which could fund between 230 and 700 interns depending how much funding the student qualifies for during the program.

“Michigan families should be able to access behavioral health resources when and where they need them,” said MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel. “This initiative represents a significant investment in Michigan's behavioral health workforce and reflects our broader strategy to address the growing demand for behavioral health professionals.”

Additional stipend programs offered by MDHHS include:

$5,000 per semester social worker/child welfare worker stipend.
$30,000 master’s degree in social work stipends.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited program within the United States and have an approved internship in Michigan that meets the stipend program requirements. Students will take part in pre- and post-internship surveys and engage in program evaluation activities. A commitment to seeking employment in Michigan's behavioral health sector after graduation is also encouraged.

Applicants must complete an online form by Monday, Aug. 26, and submit the necessary documentation. After the submission, applicants will receive notification of their acceptance status via email within three weeks of the application deadline.
