Renovation is complete at Boos Recreation Center

Jackson residents are returning to the Boos Recreation Center for programs following the completion of a major renovation project. Construction started in March and wrapped up in early August, giving the community gathering place a much-needed overhaul.

$545,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds were used for the renovation project.

With sections of the 56-year-old building coming apart, the first priority was stabilizing the structure. Renovations were also completed on the center’s entrance, meeting room, bathrooms, kitchen, gymnasium ceiling, lighting, flooring, and heating system.

The Boos Center is the main gathering spot for the City’s Active Living Program, along with hosting adult exercise classes and recreation leagues.

Parks and Recreation Director Kelli Hoover says the renovation project brings fresh energy to this east side staple. “The Boos Center renovation is the culmination of five years of work to revitalize recreation facilities in Loomis Park,” Hoover said. “This project strengthens recreation services for Jackson’s east side and the entire community.”

The City of Jackson is planning another phase of construction at the Boos Recreation Center, which is set to begin in spring 2025. The next phase will bring a visitor lounge and expanded kitchen, along with an addition for a new staff office and three additional meeting rooms.

The Boos Center is located in Loomis Park, which has received substantial improvements from the City of Jackson over the past five years. A new center entrance, playground, walking path, sledding hill, landscape design, parking lot, basketball court, lighting system, and pavilion have rejuvenated this neighborhood park.
