Offensive line has been a key to
impressive production on the ground

Panthers pile up 487 rushing yards in 62-14 win over Colon

By Bruce Rolfe

The Climax-Scotts varsity football team (3-1) will enter a week number five clash against Battle Creek St. Philip (3-1) at Post Field in Battle Creek September 28 at 7 p.m. as a team becoming known for its offensive production.

C-S enjoyed its third straight game with over 500 yards in total offense in a 62-14 win over Colon September 20 at Colon.

The Panthers, who average 49 points a game, have been especially dangerous on the ground, where the team is averaging 423.5 yards a game

C-S coach Tyler Langs and Panther running backs emphasize the hard work by the offensive line has been a key to opening up some gapping holes C-S backs have been able to turn into impressive rushing numbers.

The offensive line most of the season has consisted of senior right guard Sam Bleeker, sophomore center Cole Birkam, junior left guard Ryan Pejakovich, and junior left tight end Hunter LaSala.

Seniors Luke Lawrence and Jackson Bagwell have had the bulk of the work load carrying the ball and are producing some impressive numbers so far.

Bagwell has rushed for 737 yards on 74 carries (9.9 yards per carry average) with nine rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception. Lawrence has churned out 607 yards on 61 carries (9.9 yard average) with 13 rushing touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Logan Gilbert has added another 192 yards on 22 carries and one rushing touchdown.

Langs credits hard work on and off the field, along with the knowledge his father, former C-S varsity football coach and current assistant coach Kevin Langs brings to the offensive unit, as keys to the huge offensive numbers so far.

“Having an offensive line that are committed to what we’re doing. Obviously, to have a veteran hall of famer in coach Langs, that we’ve been able to use his knowledge,” said Tyler Langs.

Langs said all four players, who rank high academically in their class, have been able to quickly make in game adjustments quickly, which has been a plus.

“Four kids who are 3.8 (GPA), honor roll students. So we’re able to do some things a little bit differently then some other teams I’ve had. When we are (calling) an audible at the line, we’re killing plays at the line, we’re switching plays at the line. It’s a good group of kids who not only are physically able to do some football things, but obviously mentally too, and handle some of our schemes,” explained the Panther coach.

Overall, the offense has produced 1,964 yards in total offense (491 yards per game).

The Panthers rolled up 487 yards on the ground against Colon, with Bagwell and Lawrence both enjoying big games. Lawrence carried the ball 14 times and ran for 243 yards with five rushing touchdowns, while Bagwell had 175 yards on nine carries and three rushing touchdowns.

Gilbert, who scored the other C-S touchdown, added 47 yards on three carries.

The Panthers scored on their first three possessions to take a 20-0 lead after one quarter. Lawrence, on a 62-yard run (Lawrence ran in the two-point conversion), and Bagwell, with touchdown runs of 59 yards (the two-point conversion attempt failed), and 79 yards (two-point conversion failed) did the damage.

C-S tacked on three more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a commanding 40-6 lead at halftime.

Lawrence scored all three Panther touchdowns in the stanza on runs of 23 (the two-point conversion attempt failed), 11 (two-point attempt failed) and one yard (two-point conversion scored by Dane Sattler).

Colon’s lone score in the first half came on an Owen Wilson eight-yard reception from quarterback Jeremiah West (the two-point conversion failed).

A touchdown run by Bagwell (the two-point conversion attempt failed) at the 10:05 mark of the third quarter and three-yard touchdown run by Gilbert (Liam LaSala ran in the two-point conversion), with 7:02 left in the quarter, gave C-S a 54-6 lead entering the final frame.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Colon’s Carter Persons hauled in a 16-yard pass from West just 11 seconds into the fourth quarter and the two-hooked up again on the two-point conversion.

A 54-yard touchdown run by Lawrence one minute later (Dane Sattler ran in the two-point conversion) closed out the scoring.

Hunter LaSala had three catches for 77 yards.

Bagwell added 10 tackles including two for a loss totaling six yards and one fumble recovery and Jordan Grove had 10 tackles, including six solos, 3.5 tackles for a loss of 14 yards to go along with two sacks and one fumble recovery. Chase VanMiddlesworth added nine tackles and he broke up two pass plays and Liam LaSala added seven tackles, including six solo tackles to go with one quarterback, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
