State’s minimum wage to jump
20% under court ruling

LANSING (AP) — Michigan’s current minimum wage will rise 20% by the end of February thanks to a recent state Supreme Court decision.

The state says the current $10.33 minimum wage will increase to $10.56 on Jan. 1, then to $12.48 on Feb. 21.

It will rise each year and reach nearly $15 an hour in early 2028.

The state released the schedule following a summer ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court.

The court reinstated changes sought by advocates for low-wage workers seeking a higher minimum wages and changes to sick leave laws.

More than 280,000 people signed petitions in favor of the improvements. But instead of putting the issue on the 2018 statewide ballot, the Republican-controlled Legislature
approved the changes, then watered them down before a new governor and new members of the Legislature took office.

The Supreme Court said the actions were illegal.

October is Pro Bono Month in Michigan

The State Bar of Michigan continues to celebrate October as Pro Bono Month.

Established by the State Bar 17 years ago, the purpose of the month is to promote pro bono events and raise awareness of the need for pro bono legal services throughout Michigan.

Many legal services and groups participate in the observance by organizing legal clinics, attorney trainings, law school pro bono pledges and award ceremonies offering pro bono opportunities for attorneys wanting to help low-income Michigan individuals and families in need of legal assistance.

Attorneys looking to get involved with a pro bono event during Pro Bono Month can check out SBM’s A Lawyer Helps "Legal Clinics & Events Calendar" for events planned during Pro Bono Month at www.michbar.org/alawyerhelps/home.
