in Athens School District

Voters in two local municipalities and one area school district will face proposals on the November 5 General Election ballot.
Voters in Climax Township will face a 1-mill, 10-year road maintenance and improvement renewal millage.
The proposal will ask voters “shall the expiring previously voted increase in the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Sec 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Climax Township of 1.0 mills ($1.00 per $1,000 of taxable value), 2014 through 2024 inclusive, and reduced to .9790 mills ($0.9790 per $1,000 of taxable value) by the required millage rollback, be renewed and increased up to the original voted 1.0 mills ($1.00 per $1,000 of taxable value) to be levied for a period of ten (10) years, 2025-2034 inclusive, for dedicated funding for maintaining and improving existing public secondary roads within the Township.”
It is estimated $99,358 will be raised in the first year of the levy if approved by voters.
Voters in Climax Township approved a 1-mill road millage in 2014 by a 416-387 margin.
Prior to 2014, Climax Township voters rejected road millage proposals in two elections, but the first road millage proposal approved by Climax Township voters was a five-year, 2 mill proposal in 1990 that passed by a 214-136 margin. Climax Township voters then approved two proposals relating to the road millage in 1994. A proposal asking for a renewal of the 1.8453 Road Millage for the years 1995-1999 passed by a 234-149 margin, while Proposal II, asking for an increase of Road Millage by 0.1547 due to Headlee Rollback for the years 1995-1999, passed by a 198-173 margin. In 2000 The 2-mill, five-year road millage renewal proposition passed by a 205-163 margin. In 2004, a 10-year, 2-mill Road Millage renewal proposition passed by a 325-195 margin.
Voters in the City of Galesburg will face a 2-mill proposal for road maintenance and improvements in the November 5 General Election.
The millage proposal is for a period of 10 years (2025 through 2034). If approved, it is estimated $74,292.47 will be collected the first year of the levy.
City of Galesburg Mayor Linda Marble said nearly all of the streets in the City need repaving. She adds if the City receives an infrastructure loan/grant, the City will need funding for any road maintenance and road paving after the infrastructure has been replaced.
In the Athens School District voters will face a sinking fund millage renewal proposal that will allow the school district to continue to levy the building and site sinking fund millage that expires with the 2025 tax levy. The proposal asks if the current authorized millage rate of 3 mills ($3.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) which may be assessed against all property in Athens Area Schools, Calhoun, Branch, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph Counties, be renewed for a period of 5 years, 2026 to 2030, inclusive, to continue to provide for a sinking fund for the construction or repair of school buildings and all other purposes authorized by law. The estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2026 is approximately $600,000. This is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2025 tax levy.
