Four fire departments respond to structure fire

Four local fire departments responded to a structure fire in the 2000 block of D Drive in Leroy Township Sunday evening.

Leroy Township Fire Chief Jim Thompson said his fire department was dispatched at 6:37 p.m. Sunday.

He said a generator was being started in a shed near the house, however it appears fuel started to leak out and caught the generator on fire. Thompson said the shed quickly caught on fire and the fire spread to the corner of the house. The fire chief adds the porch on the house caught on fire and the fire extended into the house some.

Thompson said while the fire departments got the fire knocked down quickly, a significant amount of damage occurred from the fire. “My gut feeling is they would probably tear it down,” said the Leroy Township Fire Chief, who adds the fire reached into the rafters some.

Thompson said the homeowners were at the home at the time of the fire and were not injured. He said there were no injuries to any firefighter.

The fire chief said there were two cats in the home at the time of the fire and they were safely located by firefighters in a lower area by the garage door.

Thompson said the home was insured.

Besides Leroy Township, Newton Township, Climax Township and Athens Township all assisted at the scene.
