License renewal deadline is November 30

The deadline for Michigan attorneys to complete their annual license is quickly approaching. License renewals, including mandatory disclosures and payment of fees, must be completed online or postmarked by the post office by Saturday, November 30, 2024, to avoid a $50 late fee.

To renew your license or check the status of your renewal, log in at michbar.org/ MemberArea. All active and inactive Michigan attorneys are emailed renewal notices September through November until their renewal is complete. Note: Emeritus and resigned members no longer renew their licenses.

The State Bar of Michigan administers the license renewal process and distributes the funds as directed by the Michigan Supreme Court. Mandatory fees paid by Michigan attorneys fund the State Bar of Michigan, the Attorney Discipline System, and the Client Protection Fund.

For more information about license renewal, see License Renewal FAQs here. If you have questions about your fees, require assistance with the website or payment process, please email SBMfinance@michbar.org.

SADO seeks summer legal interns for 2025

The Michigan State Appellate Defender Office (SADO) seeks first- and second-year law students committed to public service, racial equity, and social justice to join its Direct Appeals Summer Internship Program. SADO provides representation to poor people who appeal their state criminal convictions.

Interns are paired with a staff attorney and work with other SADO team members including investigators, social workers, reentry specialists, and support staff.  Because Michigan has a unique criminal appellate process which allows for factual development on direct appeal, interns can expect to work in both trial and appellate courts, and to attend trial court hearings and Court of Appeals arguments.

The internship is hybrid. SADO has space in both the Lansing and Detroit offices for interns to work in-person.

The program will run from late May through August 2025—precise dates are flexible. Due to limited resources, the internship opportunities are currently unpaid.

Anyone interested in applying should e-mail a resume and cover letter together in a single PDF file to internships@sado.org. The subject line should read “Direct Appeals Summer Internship Application.” The cover letter should indicate why the applicant wants to be part of the SADO team and work for its clients. Applications should be submitted by January 10, 2025, at 5 p.m. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis. For questions, email internships@sado.org.
