Raquel S. Sportel joins Warner


Raquel S. Sportel has joined Warner Norcross + Judd LLP as an associate.

Sportel concentrates her practice on trusts and estates with a focus on estate planning, estate settlement and trust administration. She works with individuals and families to develop estate plans, focusing on strategies for wealth preservation, tax planning, charitable giving and business succession. Sportel advises fiduciaries and families in connection with post-death estate settlement and ongoing trust administration. She handles representation in court proceedings and works closely with financial institutions, financial advisors and accountants throughout the settlement and administration process. She is based in the firm’s Grand Rapids office.  

Prior to joining Warner, Sportel was a trusts and estates attorney with Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP in Chicago and with Matlin Law Group in Northbrook, Illinois.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a juris doctor from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, where she was production editor for the UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology and Privacy Law.

A native of Chicago, Sportel now resides in Grand Rapids with her husband and children.   

Liggins named a Notable Black Leader by Crain’s



Warner Norcross + Judd LLP attorney James L. Liggins Jr. has been selected one of the Notable Black Leaders by Crain’s Grand Rapids Business.

Liggins serves as senior counsel in Warner’s Kalamazoo office, where he runs a practice encompassing construction litigation, property disputes and real estate concerns, as well as business contractual disputes, criminal defense, health care issues and emergency manager matters.   

Liggins was appointed by the governor to the State Board of Ethics and serves as president of the West Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and co-chair of the Judicial Qualifications Committee of the State Bar of Michigan.

He  was recently appointed to the Board of Commissioners for the State Bar of Michigan.
