At an invitation-only event this month, a number of the key players in the Detroit bankruptcy case will be featured in a panel discussion centered around the release of a book written by retired federal judge Gerald Rosen, who served as the chief mediator during the bankruptcy proceedings that spanned 16 months in 2013-14.
The book – “Grand Bargain: The Inside Story of Detroit’s Dramatic Journey from Bankruptcy to Rebirth” – comes at the 10th anniversary of the city’s emergence from the depths of financial ruin, and portrays many of the heroes and heroines who are credited with laying the foundation for Detroit’s rebirth.
“The narrative charts a path through the largest, most complex municipal bankruptcy in our nation’s history,” according to those promoting the book-release event at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
“A stunning authoritative account of the heroes and heroines who joined together to rescue an iconic American city, the book is a compelling read for lawyers, alternative dispute resolution enthusiasts, government leaders, educators, and anyone interested in American history and Detroit’s place in it,” the event organizers noted.
Among the panelists scheduled to participate: former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder; Dan Gilbert, co-founder and chairman of Rocket Companies; Gene Gargaro, chairman emeritus of the DIA; Kevyn Orr, former emergency manager for the City of Detroit; retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes, who presided over the bankruptcy case; retired U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts, who served as one of the mediators and now is with the Detroit office of JAMS; and retired U.S. District Chief Judge Rosen, the book author who is one of the principals in the Detroit office of JAMS.
The book can be purchased through GrandBargainBook.com, where the author of it receives a ringing endorsement from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
“Gerald Rosen will go down as a very important figure in Detroit’s history, and anyone who reads his book will understand why,” said Duggan. “His work as mediator in the city’s bankruptcy and as architect of the Grand Bargain is a story of daring leadership, wisdom, and diplomacy. He loves this city and always believed it could recover if it was given a fair shot. Ten years later, Detroit is undergoing a historic recovery and Judge Gerald Rosen is a major part of that success.”
