“Mediation Mastery” is the title of the 7th Annual State Bar of Michigan Business Law Symposium planned for Thursday, Feb. 13 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Gem Theatre in downtown Detroit.
“The program will feature individual speakers and panel discussions regarding negotiation and mediation strategy and method,” said Troy attorney Mark Rossman, who has served as the moderator and organizer of the event since its inception.
As is customary, the Symposium will feature a blue-ribbon list of presenters and panelists, including Tom McNeill of McNeill ADR; Charles “Chip” Brower of Wayne State University Law School; Daniel McCarthy of Butzel; retired Oakland County Circuit Judge Denise Langford-Morris, now of JAMS in Detroit; retired 52-3 District Court Judge Julie Nicholson, a mediator with MI-JADR; and Jerome Rock of Jerome Rock Law.
The featured panel discussion will be moderated by renowned criminal defense attorney Tom Cranmer of Miller Canfield, a past president of the State Bar of Michigan.
Rossman, a University of Michigan alum and head of a Troy law firm that bears his name, will deliver the “opening statement” at the February 13 event, while his longtime Symposium colleague E. Powell Miller, of Miller Law in Rochester, will present the “closing argument” to cap off the program.
“We feel the theme of the program is especially relevant this year because of mandated mediation in business cases,” said Rossman, who indicated that the demand for ADR services continues to grow in today’s legal environment.
Rossman said he is particularly grateful for the support he has received from Miller at each of the Symposium events, calling the noted attorney “one of our greatest legal entrepreneurs and inspirations in growing a law firm.”
Miller, in turn, praised Rossman for his efforts in making the Symposium a “must-attend” program for business law practitioners.
“Mark has done an incredible job with this event, which has taken on a life of its own because of his work in attracting a great group of speakers each year,” said Miller.
This year, Rossman indicated that a “mystery speaker” will add even more intrigue to the program that will be staged at the Gem Theatre, a popular performing arts venue located on Madison Street near the Detroit Athletic Club.
“We are excited to be at the Gem, which will bring a special vibe to this year’s event,” said Rossman.
Tickets to the Symposium cost $135 for those attending in person, while the price is $50 for those who elect to go the virtual route.
