Servitto, more commonly referred to as ‘Judge Ed’, has served on the circuit court bench since Jan. 1, 2001.
“If there was anyone who earned the title of ‘trial court judge’, it’s Ed,” said Chief Judge James M. Biernat Jr. “He’s probably tried more cases in the last 23 years than any circuit court judge in Michigan.”
During his time on the bench, Servitto served in both Family Court and the Civil and Criminal Division. In addition to handling the cases on his docket, Servitto is credited with starting one of the county’s first specialty courts without state or county involvement.
This “Mini Court” allowed Servitto to engage with young offenders in an attempt to ensure their successful completion of probation and to build a solid foundation for their future, Biernat said.
Prior to taking the bench, Servitto worked as a private practice lawyer for 11 years and is a former city attorney of Warren.
He also worked as an assistant attorney general for Michigan and a special assistant attorney general for the state of Wisconsin.
As an assistant attorney general, Servitto — among other things — successfully litigated Michigan’s first consumer protection cases as well as prosecuting one of the first doctor fraud Medicaid overutilization cases and pharmacy fraud of generic substitutions.
Servitto received his Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University and earned his Juris Doctor cum laude from the Detroit College of Law in 1977.
Prior to law school, Servitto grew up on Detroit’s west side. While attending Detroit Catholic Central, he worked laying tile. Then, while attending Eastern Michigan University, he worked as a custodian, shoe salesman, wrecker and mechanic.
Earlier this year, Servitto was awarded the Justinian Award by the Italian American Bar Association of Michigan.
In a news release announcing the retirement, Biernat said Servitto’s “dedication to his job and his passion for the law is unwavering, as I’ve witnessed as chief judge and as assistant prosecutor assigned to his court.
“He’ll be missed and we hope that he would grace us with being a visiting judge for us in the future.”
