The Climax Township Board will consider using unspent American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds towards 2024 road projects.

Clerk Sarah DeBoer told the township board at its regular meeting December 10 the Michigan Township Association strongly recommends that townships not only allocate ARPA funds by the end of the calendar year, but also disburse those funds.

According to the unofficial minutes from the December 10 Township Board meeting, the township’s unallocated and unspent ARPA funds total $36,759.89.

The board noted previous projects the board hoped to use ARPA funds for such as gravel for the cemetery and a board table with podium, could come out of general fund.

The Board then unanimously approved a motion to purchase a conference table from Locust Grove Furniture for $3,000, with the money coming from the general fund. The table is an ash, 36-inch wide by eight feet long table with a cherry stain.

The Board also unanimously approved columbarium rates of $1,300 per niche at Harrison Cemetery at the December 10 meeting.

There are 48 niches available to be sold. The December 10 unofficial meeting minutes notes the township’s cost for the columbarium and foundation is approximately $32,000. The township would need to charge $700 per niche to recover construction costs plus $400 for the internment and $200 standard engraving charge for a total cost of $1,300 for a cremation burial in the columbarium at Harrison Cemetery.

The Township unofficial meeting minutes adds the $1,300 would be put into the general fund at the time of purchase. The general fund would pay the sextant and the engraver after the service.

The Township Board discussed the idea of creating a separate cemetery fund.
